I picked up 4 boxes of Remington rifled shotgun slugs yesterday and I’m noticing the overall length is a bit smaller than the buckshot loads I normally fire. Both the buckshot and slugs were marked on the box as 2/3 inch shells, so why are the slugs a bit smaller overall? Will they work fine in my Mossberg 590A1?
I’m not new, I’m just used to my shells being the length they’re maked on the box to be.
I’ve got Sellier and Bellot buckshot, and it’s a bit longer.
Thanks Metro, as long as it works. How do I pick your answer as best? I’m new to yahoo answers.

I recently purchased a new shotgun, and I was thinking of selling my other one. It’s a Maverick 88 12 gauge. I’ve had it for about five months, and it’s only been fired a couple of times; for breaking in purposes- and by a couple of times, I mean less than 10.
What would be the best way to sell it, I live in Savannah, GA so I’m not expecting to get the full amount I paid for it, but a reasonable price. I’ve never used gunbroker.com so I’m not sure how that works, but about locally, any suggestions?
(And as far as my breaking in pattern, that’s not my typical break in pattern, usually it’s a hundred rounds of buckshot; but I just wanted to make sure everything cycled properly with the HD load)

okay im a huge fan of shotguns i currently have a winchester 1300 remington 870 express a remington 870 wingmaster and a browning a-5 all are great in the own ways but i want a shotgun i can use for EVERYTHING in the south eastern united states this is for dove ducks rabbit deer black bear. now this is what i want and yall tell me the gun i need i want a 12 gauge chamberd for 3 1/2 shells pump action with a 30” or longer barrel i know people are going to say get anouther 870 chamberd for 3 1/2 but i have not seen one with a 30” or longer barrel if i can not find a gun with a 3 1/2 chamber and 30”+ barrel im ganna settle with a benelli nova oh and i will buy a gun and buy a after market barrel
my 87 is chamberd for 3” it want cycle 3 1/2
i have a winchester with a 30” and yall are wrong a longer barrel keeps the shot in tighter for longer distances think about it a 18” barrel want shoot as accurate as a 28” and a 28” want shoot as far as a 30” i just like the 30” im a real big guy 6"3 280 pounds and these long toms are just as easy to manouver threw the woods as i am and i like 3 1/2 00 buck shot when im deer hunting i am a firm beleaver in buck shot and with my winchester 12 gauge 30” barrel extra full choke im not scared to shoot one with buckshot at 65 yards it patterns so good i wanted the 3 1/2 oo buck because it has twice as many pellets and a long barrel ( i guess im going to settle with a nova 28”) and a extra full choke i figured id be on at around 80 yards. but i guess im going to get a 28” barrel now whats this i here about the mossberg? is it a good gun?

I have heard that 00 buck is the best for self defense, and from what I read, 00 buckshot is 9 pellets of .33 caliber and about 54 grains each that travel around 1300 fps.
I have just learned about the 12 gauge tri-ball. It is supposedly 3 hard cast pellets of .60 caliber and about 315 grains each that travel around 1150 fps.
With that kind of power, wouldn’t the tri-ball be a much better self defense round then the 00 buck?

Shells of buckshot, or bullets?

I have a Mossberg 500A Persuader with a Choate pistol grip folding stock. I live in a very small apartment and I was wondering what opinions on what loads I should use, and any comments on the loads I have in it hand how it is stored to be ready to be used to defend my apartment. I’ll start with the loads I have in the magazine tube first coming out of the tube, then the extra’s I have on my Side Saddle, Uncle Mikes Clinger Sling, and stock shell holder. The first load that’s would be loaded when I rack the shotgun, because I keep it in what’s called "Cruiser Ready", because I not concerned about giving away my position because it’s only 3 or 4 steps from my front door to my bedroom, which is in the back of my apartment, like I said, it’s small. I’m mostly concerned about over penetration. The first load when I rack the shotgun is one I made myself by taking a 00 Mag Seller&Bellot 12 pellet shell, which all you have to do is remove the plastic disc which acts as the crimp, then I put 7 #4 Federal copper plated buck shot in first, the Federal Steel BB shot, about 30 of them, then some 7.5 bird shot and then I added the plastic buffer that was in the shell that I got the #4 buck shots from the Federal shell. Then I Have 2 Federal Premium Steel BB loads, followed by 2 Agulia mini-shells that I took out the 7.5 birdshot and filled them with 15 steel BB and recrimped them, then I have one load of Federal Tactical #4 buck shot, followed by 2 Agulia Mini-Slugs, which gives me 8 in the tube, and I can still put another shell up to 3" in situation calls for a slug or some 00. Does this sound like a good set up to stop an intruder and still prevent as much as possible over penetration? On the Side Saddle I have 3 #4 Federal Tactical Buckshot shells, along with a Fleccett (sp?) round, a 325gr Federal Sabot Slug, and Steel BB shot shell. On the stock shell holder, I have 5 Federal 00 Low Recoil shells, and on the sling I have 2 Winchester Hollow Point Rifled Slugs, 2 Remington Rifled Slugs, 3 Federal Hydra-Shok Rifled Slugs, 2 3" Remington Express Mag 15 count 00 buckshot shells, and the 2 Federal Premium 00 Mag Shells. And like I said before, I keep it "Cruiser Ready", meaning shells in the magazine, empty chamber, and safety on, next to my bed. Does this sound like a good set up, any comment or suggestions welcome. Thank you.

My double barrel shotgun has a modified choke and a full choke. Is it okay to shoot LEAD buckshot through both of them?Try to keep in mind that it is an older shotgun, (12 ga. I’m not quite sure how old it is, probably somewhere from 50 – 15 years old), so it probably has wall thinner than most shotguns made today.
Thanks A LOT!!!!!

I live in an apartment. I very careful with guns. I realize any bullet will travel through walls, but what is the best gun(i.e. shotgun, handgun, etc.) and bullet (i.e. buckshot, hollowpoint, etc.) for self defense that will break up the fastest. I don’t want to fire a round that will go through the whole appt complex if the worst happened. I’m thinking 9mm hp would be good.

Hey, I’m thinking about buying a pump action shotgun for home defense and recreational shooting. I hope I never have to use it for the first purpose, but in case I do, I’d like something that’s efficient and cheaper than spending 2000 bucks on a fancier gun. Here’s my one concern: I grew up around rifles with my dad and on my grandparents’ farm, but I’ve never fired a shotgun–just rifles, which obviously didn’t have the kick shotguns do. I’m a woman in my early twenties, but I’m in great shape, I lift weights, and I’m very physically strong so I’m not worried TOO much about the kick. That said, I know it’s definitely something I need to consider. I’ve heard it may be best to get a 12 gauge shotgun because of their ammo versatility and stopping power, and I can use a lighter buckshot to reduce the kick. But how negatively will that affect the stopping power? I’m hoping I can try out different options before making a purchase, but I’d just like some general advice. Any help greatly appreciated! Oh and also, if I buy different chokes, can I shoot both buckshot and slugs? How difficult is it to change shotgun choke tubes, and how much do they usually cost? Are they included with some guns? Thanks again for any help!

I have been thinking about getting some double odd buckshot for the shells but I am not completely convinced that a .410 has enough stopping power to convince an intruder to leave my adobe and now! Any advise on types of loads to buy that will give the shotgun that extra whollop thats needed?

I bought this gun for deer hunting, but the question is can this gun shoot slugs without anything special needed. And if so what kind (brand) slug. And can a buckshot do the trick. Thank You

Wouldn’t it be an important piece of information in a shooting death, for the police and the ME to know the size of the load used to kill the victim with a 12 ga shotgun during the investigation to make a ruling on the manner of death? Wouldn’t it matter if it was birdshot or buckshot? I read a story where the police investigators and the ME never even removed the shell casing that inflicted the fatal shot from the shot gun. The size of the load in a shotgun shell is on the side of the casing. How do they determine anything with out even knowing the size of the shot used? Do they just guess? No autopsy or ballistics test were performed not even a toxicology was done. And there were two shots fired and they left the first shell casing lying on the ground isn’t that also evidence? It was a very curious story to me I just wanted to know what the proceedure would be in a case like that, when no witnesses were present. Shouldn’t it be fully investigated?

I have a benelli supernova tactical shotgun which I have taken to the range and fired maybe 30 rounds through or so (buckshot and slugs). I purchased a remington universal cleaning kit, I’m just curious what are the steps to clean my gun?
Of course I know how to take off the barrel and such.
I just don’t know the order of things to do, when do I use the bore cleaning solvent, the patches, the bronze brush, etc.?
Do I need to worry about scratching anything? I would assume steel is harder than bronze… but I want to make sure.
Does the order even really matter? Or should I just use the brush until the big chunks of wad and lead oare gone and then use the patch with solvent to finish the job?

They have great stopping power. Slugs have more power than a 5.56mm round and the average engagement for U.S. personel today is 75 yards or less. Slugs have an effective range up to 125 yards and sometimes more. Even buckshot would have effective firepower for putting down lead down range. The Usas 12 Full Auto Shotgun has a 50 round drum that can fire birdshot, buckshot, slugs, and even 40mm rounds with effective range up to 200 yards! Why wouldn’t the U.S. use shotguns for combat instead of door breaching?

I am going to be hunting white tail deer this season, with a shotgun for the first time. My barrel is a smooth bore barrel, so I am wondering what kind of choke I should use, if I want to use, slugs, buckshot or sabot rounds. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated.
The current choke in my barrel is a Remington Mod Choke.

what is the type of ammo to use in a shotgun to blow a big hole in something like you see in the movies? Is it slugs with the 9 steel buckshot pellets?
