Looking at the 12 gauge pumps – Maverick 88, Mossberg 500, Remington 870. I’ll consider others if you list them.
Specifically I want to know the differences between them. Is the felt-recoil about the same on all of them?
are they all equally reliable?
how about spread pattern? what is more accurate at 50 yards?
for fun, which one would you think would hold up longer in a post-apocalyptic ZombieLand?

I want a versatile shotgun that I can use for fun and eventually hunting. I don’t want a super expensive one either, preferably under 0. And a maverick a good shotgun? Any suggestions and experience helps. Thanks.

The Maverick 88 is a Mossberg 500 clone. Is this shotgun a good buy?
I just said what the capacity was. The norm is 4+1 and i like the 5+1.
The norm on The Rem 870 and others is 4+1, isn’t it?
And how much would that drilling and tapping cost? Can you give me an estimate?

What happens if for example you have a bolt action shotgun with a rifled barrel and shoot bird or buckshot from it?
I want to get a bolt action shotgun, a Maverick 95, but i cant find a smooth barrel for it only a rifled barrel.

Maverick is a Mossberg company and this model is almost identical to a 500 except the safety is on the front of the trigger guard instead of on the tang. I’m a lefty and reaching under the trigger guard to take off the safety is disruptive and annoying. I already emailed Mossberg but they answered with some form letter garbage about not offering any left-handed shotgun models. I just want to know if it’s possible and whether I’ll definitely need a gunsmith to do it or not. Thanks.

Comparing them side by side I cant see it. The Mossberg has dual extractors where the 870EX only has 1. The 870EX has those little dimples on the magazine tube so you can’t add an extension without modification. aside from the aluminum receiver, plastic trigger guard and safety, I don’t see the validity in this argument. I, however, do see the validity in the comparison of the Remington 870 Express competing with Mossberg’s Maverick 88 line.
Looking for a press release, link or a market comparison.
Well, Actually I was just refferring to the 870 Express, not just the 870 itself.
The police are issued Remington 870 Police series, different firing pin, steel lined forend, R3 recoil pad, Parkerized finish, Speedfeed stock, etc. All NOT standard on Express models.
The Mossberg 590 series was the only model to pass the updated 3443G specifications with a heavier barrel, metal trigger guard and safety, magazine tube end cap, bayonet lug, Ghost ring sights etc, NOT standard on 500 models. (although a metal heat shield is standard on some 500 models)
Thanks, I guess.

One of these questions are for me and the other is for my Brother.
My brother wants a .22 Rifle. He is new to the Idea of owning a gun. We both have shot many guns including 9mm, .223, and 12 Gauge.
My brother was looking at the Famous Ruger 10/22 and the Mossberg Plinkster. He likes the Idea of upgrading the Ruger 10/22 but he doesn’t like the Price. He knows that the Plinkster is Cheap and it is very Accurate but he doesn’t like how you can’t upgrade it. WHICH WOULD BE MORE OF A BANG FOR THE BUCK?
For me I like the Idea of a 12gauge shotgun. It will be for Hunting, home defense, and the regular shooting at fun stuff(Junk).
The Shotgun needs to be cheap(under 0). I was looking at the NewEngland Arms, Maverick and a few others. What is your guy’s taste?

I am purchasing a 12 ga. Maverick 88 shotgun and am looking for some good, CHEAP shotgun Birdshot #9 – #4 ammo in bulk. I hear everyone talking about paying for a case of 250 shells but I can’t find anything close to that price range. I am looking to buy the ammo online. Thanks.

Well, here’s the deal. I was misinformed by a few people, and ended up buying the Mossberg 88/Maverick 88 from Academy, and am now stuck with it since gun sales are final. So, I’m contemplating pawning it in order to get a Mossberg 500 or a Rem 870. I’ve heard they are only a few more bucks(max 100) than the new 88 I purchased for 0.
What will pawn shops offer me for the shotgun? I’ve never pawned anything but I have a feeling theyre going to want to give me for it. Anyone have any idea what they might offer considering its brand new, with all the original paperwork and box?
Also, where and how much (provide websites if you can) are shorter tactical Mossberg 500′s and Rem 870′s. I haven’t seen any Rem 870′s that had an 18in barrell.
Thanks fellas… let me know.
I figured as much Doc, I’m advertising it on craigs and soon to be on ebay right now. We’ll see. How much should I sell it for? Got a shoulder saver, lube, and 2 boxes of shells. I’m advertising for 0 right now.
Look at my other post and you’ll realize why I am looking for a 500 now.
I’m basically dissapointed because of what I’ve heard. If I went and shot this gun I couldn’t tell if it was a piece of crap or if it was a great gun. I don’t know guns, but I figure if I’m spending this kind of money I might as well throw out another and get something people say is much better made, like the Mossberg 500. I just didn’t know it was that close in price, if I knew, I wouldn’t have bought the 88. I just have this fear of a year or so from now I take the gun out to the woods, shoot it a few times and it screws up and is basically garbage. Everyone says 500′s have ALOT more durability than the 88′s, and I believe them. I’ve heard alot about the military using 500′s, and if theyre that good, and I can afford it or an 88, I’ll go with the 500.
Yeah I realized ebay won’t let me sell them (technically). But it is listed on craigs, and I’ve gotten two emails, so we’ll see how it goes. By the way I didn’t say it WAS on ebay, I said I was about to put it on ebay.

I am a newbie when it comes to shotguns and after much reasearch I decided to go with a Mossberg Mav 88 with the 18.5 in barrel. I would like to know what sights are best for home defense. I have heard ghost ring sights, some say stick with the bead sight, I just thought I would ask and get some opinions. Thanks for your time
I did purchase a butt cuff and a 5 pack of 2 3/4 00 buckshot. That seemed to be the popular consensus from what I read.
StormGal or anyone else, where could I get a tritium front bead for my maverick 88?

I bought a Maverick by Mossberg Shotgun recently with screw in chokes (full and Improved Cylinder). I would also like to take it deer hunting. A Few people have said that its ok with the improved cylinder choke but very bad with any other choke. I just need to know if i can shoot slugs using the improved Cylinder choke or if i need a separate barrel.

Does anyone out there own a pump action Maverick shotgun made by Mossberg? I bought one alone with 3 choke tubes at a very good price. The gun is a 12 gauge with a black, synthetic forearm and stock. The man I bought it from told me it’s shoots a little to the left, (4-5 inches), which it does. It has a ventilated rib, with 2 beads on the rib. The first bead is alright. The bead on the end of the barrel is defineatly not in the center of the rib. It’s offset to the left a little. I went to Wal Mart and saw that they had 1 just like mine. I looked at it and the bead on the end of the barrel was about a quarter of an inch long and made out of white, irredescent plastic. I’m thinking someone broke the original bead, and installed this little metal tip of the end of my gun. I’ve owned shotguns with irredescent sites before. Can anyone else confirm that they have this type of Mossberg and that the bead on the end of the barrel is made out of irredescent plastic? Thx alot.

Yeah, mine has the small brass pin also. At the end of the barrel, it has a pin just like the brass one, but it’s black. Thx for all the links about Truglo and HIVIZ. I chatted with someone at Cabela’s, and there going to start sending me the catalog again. Thx everybody that answered.

I want to shoot skeet and/or trap. I need a 20 gauge shotgun because I have a back injury and when I tried it with a 12 gauge it caused some pain.
Looking at the Mossberg website, they only mention a 12 gauge skeet choke. Nothing for 20 gauge. What choke would be the closest substitute; improved cylinder, modified or full? Are the chokes interchangeable between these two? I’d save with the Maverick. Seems the Maverick holds 5 1 and the Mossberg holds only 4 1. Are there any other major difference for a newbie between the two? Is there another choke from another maker more suitable? Is there any other sub 0 20 gauge pump shot guns you’d recommend over these two? Maybe NEF Pardner pump? Thanks.

I dont know if I have the 88 Field Model or the 88 All Purpose.
I know its a Maverick 88 by mossberg. It only holds 2(3) shells total. I know MOST things for a mossberg 500 fit the gun.
My question is do they make a magazine extention for it, 6 0r 8 round?
where can I get one?
