I got into shooting when I was about 9 but it began with high powered air rifle and since age 15 I wanted to purchase firearm. I decided to follow the law and buy one when I turn 18 and since then I been researching everything about rifles. I turned 18 already and want to purchase a firearm and wanted the shooter opinion. Should I bbeginwith a 22 or should I go straight for the shotgun I want to get. I just think it will be fun to plink using slugs and sshot shellsin the outdoor range.
Okay, my friend purchased a shotgun a couple years ago and now doesn’t need it so he gave it to me. It is actually a Hawk Industries model which is practically the exact same as a Remington 870 only with a different name. Parts are interchangeable. It is the long barrel version and currently only holds three shots, 2+1. I’d like to make it into more of a home defense/ tactical weapon. Any suggestions? I thought about trading it in but the gun shops around here all say they already have too many and couldn’t give a fair price for it. I already replaced the stock to a folding but wanted to know what else I can do and if it is possible to do. As you can tell, this is my first shotgun though I own various pistols and a couple rifles.
Hello everyone, I want to buy a shotgun. This will be my first shotgun. I was considering getting something with a pistol grip, and this one here seems really good.
Looks cool, and has a nice stock that can hold shells too. It is 400. I won’t be using it for hunting. I will just use it "for fun" at the range. I have some rifles, but not a shotgun. If anyone has these, do u think it’s worth the 400?
Its my first year hunting whitetail, i will be using a 12 gauge, 2 and 3/4" slug. I will be hunting a winchester model 1300 or a some savage semi auto. I just picked up federal truball, winchester super-X , remington slugger and winchester supreme platinum tip slugs. Whats the effect range? There both smooth bored shotguns. and open sights.
They all say 1 oz execpt the winchester supreme. It says 400 grains. How big is the 1 oz. whats that mean? im good with rifles but i dont know anything about slugs
I have been wanting to find the perfect reference material for ammo which is used for handguns, rifles and shotguns. I would prefer visual pics of the ammo or at least a silhouette of all ammo. Also I would like to see what is in each cartridge for buck and bird shot (like what is it that is coming out of the end of the barrel).
I shot clay pigeons today for the first time, and now I’m hooked. I have been target shooting for well over fifteen years with rifles and handguns, but I’ve hardly ever touched a shotgun until today. I fired a 410, 20, and 12 gauge. In the 20, I shot a pump and a semi. Obviously, I liked the semi-auto the best, but I’m not ruling out a pump. I’m looking for quality, but not too expensive. I doubt whether I’ll ever hunt, so this will be strictly for trap.
Thanks for the info DTT. Can I get a decent trap gun for around 0? How much is the Rem 870 Trap? I don’t want to spend too much because as for right now, I don’t know how often I’ll be able to shoot. This will be strictly for fun. I doubt whether I’ll ever get competitive.
Hey, I’m thinking about buying a pump action shotgun for home defense and recreational shooting. I hope I never have to use it for the first purpose, but in case I do, I’d like something that’s efficient and cheaper than spending 2000 bucks on a fancier gun. Here’s my one concern: I grew up around rifles with my dad and on my grandparents’ farm, but I’ve never fired a shotgun–just rifles, which obviously didn’t have the kick shotguns do. I’m a woman in my early twenties, but I’m in great shape, I lift weights, and I’m very physically strong so I’m not worried TOO much about the kick. That said, I know it’s definitely something I need to consider. I’ve heard it may be best to get a 12 gauge shotgun because of their ammo versatility and stopping power, and I can use a lighter buckshot to reduce the kick. But how negatively will that affect the stopping power? I’m hoping I can try out different options before making a purchase, but I’d just like some general advice. Any help greatly appreciated! Oh and also, if I buy different chokes, can I shoot both buckshot and slugs? How difficult is it to change shotgun choke tubes, and how much do they usually cost? Are they included with some guns? Thanks again for any help!
I’m totally ignorant about firearms. Answer this in terms of the pluses and minuses of rifles, handguns and shotguns. I want something that can be used as both protection and to hunt with. Please include what gauge and type of gun I should consider.
I don’t want to spend anything more than 0–if possible.
I’m of age, clean record and live in Kentucky.
Can you feasibly use a shotgun to hunt larger game such as deer?
I live in Michigan below the rifle line which means we have to use shotgun. We are planning a hunting trip in Wisconsin where rifles are allowed. I was thinking about using my AR-15 with a scope and a 5 round hunting clip I bought. Is .223 strong enough to kill deer? Have anyone used it with success? I figure if the military uses it against people it should probably be good enought to get deer too, or is this logic flawed? Bonus for personal expierence.
I know there are other better rounds to use, but I dont want to buy another rifle to go hunting in rifle country once every couple years.
I asked a gun expert why people use shotguns for hunting, instead rifles. And he replied :
"Shotguns are generally used for hunting birds, which fly very fast. It would be very difficult to hit a flying bird with a rifle. It would also be very dangerous to fire a rifle up into the air."
I’d like to know your opinion on his answer please. I mean tell me what’s exactly the danger of shooting a rifle up into the air, etc.
Why don’t they make rifles or shotguns that use this action? Besides looking cool, it would benefit from the ablity to chamber different rounds of the same bullet size (like my grandmother’s 22LR/22MAG revolver, swappable drums) as well as being a semi-auto that has nothing move after the shot fires (for better accuracy) and can be single action/double action, so you can pull back the hammer for your first shot on a deer, and then pull the trigger through the next five as it is running away. No magazine to misfeed, and very easy to clean compared to what is involved tearing apart a pump or semi auto shotgun.
If they had a revolver-action rifle that was not just a stretched out pistol, but actually looked like a normal rifle if you covered over the action’s area, and it was chambered in a good deer round and you could easily mount a scope on it, i would definitely purchase one if i could budget it.
ok just called the Cabelas in Hamburg, PA – the person at the firearms dept. said hes pretty sure u can buy any shotgun at 18, but he said the Mossberg JIC he thinks u have to be 21+, anyone know?
for the ppl saying that they refused because of me, thats not it at all, i live down the road from the store i went in talking about other guns and chatting with the employees – but when i was talking about pistols and tac. shotguns they the age limits were 21+ for pistols and 21+ for tactical shotguns. i didnt know about the shot guns – i said hmm ill have to look into that (hence why im on here) but no they where showing me rifles to not just shot guns so.. hope that clears up the "you probally looked like a ghetto monkey.
First of all I am very familiar with rifles and shotguns but not hand guns or pistols. My hubby wants either a sig or a glock 40 or 45 for Christmas. I saw a nice springfield 1911 for 500 in a pawn shop. I say nice, but I really don’t know what little imperfections to look for in pistol. Can you give me some pointers.
Actually all he said he wanted for Christmas was a pistol, his brother suggested the glock and sig
I went to a local gun shop today and they had a used Remington 870 for 9. Is that a good buy? What are some things I can look at when buying a used shotgun?
Second thing I was wondering is what does it mean to have a modified choke and what does it mean to have the barrel riffled?
Ok, maybe I should be a little more specific so I don’t come off as as completely ignorant. I have shot guns all my life and have taken the hunter’s ed class. I know what a riffled barrel is. More specifically I guess I should have asked what the purpose of a riffled barrel in a shotgun was? Is it specifically for slugs or something? I don’t have too much experience with shotguns. Not as much as with my handguns and rifles. I have never owned a shotgun. I have been interested in getting one for awhile.
Hey hows it going, I know i can legally own shotguns and rifles in my county does any one know if that also covers tactical shotguns such as the mossberg 500 cruiser?
can i have a serious answer
Im located in Westchester. I googled nys guns laws and i got a whole sheet of info explaining where you can have what kind of gun and it said its legal to own a shotgun or rifle without licence or permit. but thats the most detail it goes into on that specif matter didnt say anyhting about length and things like that. I was just curious because ther model im looking at has .45 grip no stock which looks like it cut the length considerably. I suppose i can find the closet store near me and just go ask people who HAVE to know lol
They always seeme to be using rifles and light machine guns but shotguns are very versatile and can fire buckshot for the spread and can fire slugs that can be just as if not more poweful than a standard 5.56mm rifle round. Also the U.S. has explosive buckshot as well
to learn about the pro's and con's of each as well as the biggest mistake all the "heavy artillery" guys make when choosing "terminator ammo"!
