I’m buying a Mossberg 500 pump shotgun. It will have a 20" barrel and the 8 shot tube, can handle 3" shells. It will be purely for home defense. Hopefully it will be used 1) never, 2) by me, 3) last resort by my wife. For use # 3, I want to be sure that a target in the "general direction" of a threat will be hit. #3 is why I’m moving from my favored Colt .45. I don’t give a #$@& about rebuilding the house … if it’s necessary to kill an intruder, carpentry and dry wall are a small price to pay if the gun gives us the winning hand. Any thoughts on a good load? I used to alternate a slug and bird shot in 3" Magnum form in my Remington 870 when in the home defense mode. That was arrived at by my gut feeling … never any experience, fortunately. Others probably have a more scientific viewpoint. Love to hear it.
Thanks,
Rich
Thanks for the answers guys – good info. I appreciate the comment about a "general direction" aim not being a good concept for even a shot gun. One likely shot is from an upstairs landing through an open foyer to an entrance … 20 ft. or so. Sure you have to aim, but the odds of a 2 or 3 inch group sure beats the footprint of a .45 ACP, under stress and low light. I think I’m leaning toward 2 3/4 with buckshot. Thoughts on locking mount systems? There’s another recent thread on the topic, but how about a 12v police cruiser lock (lots for sale on eBay) with a cipher pad and a combo you know by tactile feel? I’m more concerned about child safety than theft – If a guy had the time to crow bar it off the studs, it’s his … I just want family safety.
i am wanting to get a shotgun, i was thinking a remington 870, but then yet i dont know many more models, i love to turkey hunt, and duck hunt, and possibly try water fowl and pheasent, and quail. it needs to be able to have a camoflauge stock, and the right size barrel, i am mainly looking to be suggested a good barrel length and model of any company of shot gun. thanks
I’m in th market for this shotgun, but I do not like the big ass "ghost ring" sights it comes with. To me sights on a shot gun are just useless, especially since I’m not gonna be shooting at anything from more than 10 to 12 yards out as this will be primarily a home defense weapon. The beaded sight my el cheapo Mossberg Maverick 88 seems sufficient enough!
I’m looking for a new Semi-auto (light-weight) shot gun that I can put a rifled barrel on and use as a slug gun.
I was looking around and found out Benelli’s semi-autos have an inertia system instead of a gas one. Does that system still use the recoil of the gun? How does it work different from the gas.
(and if you know of any good light-weight semi-auto slug guns please feel free to post any oppinions or info on that) (except Remingtons, I can’t stand em)
Josh, I love Winchester. I own an SX3. However Winchester doesn’t make a lightweight slug gun. And to buy a new barrel for a gun cots 0 with tax. I want something light weight.
I honestly don’t like pumps. They don’t feel very comfortable in my oppinion. They are either to long or two short. (maybe it’s just me)
Looking to by a shot gun for deer hunting and was wondering if a SxS shotgun would be any good? Also if you have suggestions on other shot guns that would be good for deer hunting that are under 0 let me know, Thanks.
I am looking into buying a tactical shot gun 0-500. The tristar cobra tactical seems to have everything I need but I want to know if it is reliable or if I should just go with a Remington 870 tactical, a Mossberg 500 or 590, or a Benelli Supernova tactical any suggestions?
It’s a remington 870 I purchased about a year ago. I just purchased another shot gun and want to give the rem. 870 to my bro. He’s 23 so I don’t think age is a problem. Any info will help. Thanks.

I am trying to find a good type of shot gun to buy but i don’t know if i should get a 20 gauge or a 12 gauge i am 13 and about 5’9 and weigh about 150 i will mainly be duck, pheasant, and goose hunting what gauge and what brand and make of gun should i buy
I purchased a Remington 870 EXPRESS synthetic. The gun seems to work fine with new name brand ammo. However after reading lots of comments (which I wish I had done before I bought it) the Rem 870 Express seems to be the "low end" type shot gun. Was the Express a good buy or should I have gone with the more expensive Model 870 Marine Magnum *which is supposed to be smoother (action) due to the Electroless Nickel Plating. Many people seem to like Browning pumps and also many people say that the 870 POLICE is better than the Express. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I remember an old OF Mossberg 410 bolt action shot gun that my dad gave me back in the early 80s.I was just a kid then and dont really remember it well, and it was lost in a flood just a few years later.I remember it had a choke on the outside of the barrel that was adjustable by turning it,which I later learned Mossberg called a C-lect choke.I was just wondering if anybody might know the model number and possibly the value of this gun if it was still in good condition. Thanks for any help
im 14 years old and i want to buy some 12 gauge shot gun ammo but idk what age you haft to be to buy it

I live in a town home type condo complex with a common wall on two sides of my unit. I’ve had a 9mm hand gun for a while and just inherited a double barrel shot gun.
For home defense, what would be the best choice, the 9mm hand gun or a double barrel shotgun?
I am concerned about accidently injuring a neighbor, the 9mm is sure to go though at least one if not two or more walls but it is only one bullet. Versus the shotgun were there would be 5-10 pellets in a buck shot type round or dozens of much smaller pellets in bird shot type round but what they might not penetrate as many walls.
Any opinions please.

I don’t want to buy new weapons and I hope not to have to use them so I am stuck with the guns a I have: A 1918 Luger (9mm) and a double barrel 12 ga Shotgun; nitro speical made in 1924 by Ithica arms of New York (a duck hunting gun?)
I want to thank everyone for posting their replies, it’s been very informative! There were several answers I think are the best but haven’t quite decided which one just yet.
I think my best options are selecting the right type of ammo both guns; something like the Glaser safety slug for the 9mm and low brass/low recoil #8 type bird shot for the shotgun for home defense.
And then keep some high power 9mm rounds and 00 buck shot 3in for; insurrection, rioting and radio active zombies.

In airsoft I’m a sniper I would like to use a shotgun as a CQB weapon so when it comes down to it I can quickly pull it out so I do not have to use my pistol.
If anyone knows of any tactical vests that have a rifle holster on the back so I can pull my shot gun in CQB please post.
to learn about the pro's and con's of each as well as the biggest mistake all the "heavy artillery" guys make when choosing "terminator ammo"!
