OK. i recently asked about hunting black bear, and earlier tonight i bought a mossberg 500 12 gauge pump action shotgun to get my shot better. If i dont get a better shotgun, using the mossberg I now have with a 3" slug shell, would you say i have a decent chance at actually taking down a bear? Please do not answer this unless you have experience hunting bear.

Here is the situation. I have a Benelli Nova pump 28" barrel that I use and quite enjoy for dove and other bird hunting. I was told I could get a rifled barrel for it for deer hunting. As it turns out you can but they are SUPER hard to find and SUPER expensive. I believe Ithaca makes a 24" rifled barrel but I have heard of issues with it on the Nova.
So my question is what would be the best set up to hunt deer with what I got. Slugs, choke, sites, I wouldn’t think you would use a scope with a smooth bore slug but again I am not an expert by any means so if I am wrong, please advise. This will be my first deer hunt with this gun. Advice, technique, pointers, anything would be helpful. THANKS SO MUCH!

I recently got my first shotgun, a Mossberg 500 combo.
I know the basics, the difference between a slug, buckshot and birdshot but want to know about the different types of these loads….
Give me an overview, what is 00 Buckshot? what is light target? what is the most powerful load of buckshot? the least powerful load? ditto for birdshot….
What type of slug is hardest hitting? is there a difference between lead and steel shot?
non lethal slugs? etc..
Any information on ammo types would be greatly appreciated.
(LOL, I went to the gun shop and bought Winchest AA 8-shot light target ammo… then realized is really not a good ammo for home defense.. so guide me in the right direction for Home Defense ammo type) thanks!
Hey thanks for all your help… The websites are great! It will be really tough deciding who gets best answer…
I live in a VERY crowded city, in an upstairs apartment, so I want something like 00 Buckshot I take it….. also it is a very ghetto city, hence why I bought the gun…
(I know, I know, move out of the ghetto right? Saving for a house/just graduated from college… so the ghetto area is my only option at the moment… lol)

I just bought my mossberg 590 12ga shotgun. I mainly bought it for home defence but my question is shells. It comes with the smooth bore barrel. Won’t rifled slugs damage a smooth barrel? When I was in the USMC we shot the benelli semi automatic shotguns and we had a mix of shot and slug loaded but I don’t remember if we had rifled barrels or not. I’d like to carry on the tradition of mixed load slug/shot. Will I need to buy a rifled barrel?

Here is the scenario: You have a solid metal door, with a metal frame and it is being locked with a heavy duty lock, not just a flimsy master lock, but similar to that design. You have a 12 gauge shotgun, and can can have any kind of normally available barrel (including sawed off), and any kind of shell (deer slug, buckshot,or whatever). What would be the best combo of shell and barrel to use?

I have a Remington 870 Super Magnum " 23inch smooth barrel and mod choke " with only the bead sights. I don’t want to buy a Slug black barrel because it won’t match the camo on my Remington.
I know I can shoot rifled slugs, but with what accuracy would I have at 100 yards or would I just be throwing my money in the trash ?
I dont hunt deer, only duck, geese and turkey.
slugs are for target practice only

If one has enough time to practice, is there any point of using buckshot instead of a heavy slug?
I don’t know what rounds to buy. I just bought a Mossberg 930 SPX.
Please give me advantages/disadvantages.
A) 0000 Buckshot
B) 00 Buckshot
C) A HEAVY slug (don’t know the names)
D) Other
By the way I mean self defense against human targets.
Not elephants, bears, lions, deer, etc.
Can shotgun ammo penetrate soft armor?

And what are some typical slug weights in this size? I realize that there may be variations between manufacturers, so just ballpark it and that’ll be fine. Also, what, if any, game animals are they effective on?
Also, does anybody think that it would be worthwhile to try developing rifled barrels and saboted slugs for this size shotgun?
Thanks for taking the time to answer this question.

What rifle round does a 63 caliber shotgun sabot slug compare to, in terms of velocity, muzzle energy, and "hole"?
At 30 yards.

I have a 12 guage Remington 870 Express Magnum. I was just wondering if there’s a barrel out there that I can put on my shotgun that will use any round? Meaning, I could load a buckshot and slug in the magazine at the same time and nothing will get ruined when I shoot? Thanks.
How can I find out if my rifled barrel is partly rifled or fully? All I have is the rifled barrel and turkey barrel that came with the gun? Also, how do I check/change the choke?

I have a Stevens 12 Ga Shotgun Model 58 that has a Adjustable Choke. Is it possible to remove this choke, and if so, how? I want to use slug through it, but don’t want it to blow up in my face.

I’m 14, and wanting to srtide away from boy hunting, and i found the remington 11-87 in 20 gauge at gander mountain, it was a reasonable prise 9.99, and I’m really wanting to get it, but how bad is the recoil if I use 2 3/4” slug shells? And this will be a good choice on deer, right?

Is there any firearm that would do more damage at 10 feet than an 8 gauge shotgun with a slug? How would you compare this with a 50 caliber barrett sniper rifle at that distance? My initial thoughts would assume that the bullet from the rifle would penetrate the object, and the shotgun slug would stop once it hit the target, but would blow it up on contact.

Do they make a shotgun 2 3/4" shell for general public use that is loaded with rubber shot or slug ? What are they called ?
Are these LTL shells available to the public ?
