I am using a Remington 870 Express Shotgun With a Bushnell 4.5 variable scope. At what range should I sight for deer hunting with 1.25 oz slugs 2.75" shells. Friends say 100 yds. Is ths too far?
By how much does it help recoil wise, looked on google and yahoo and couldnt find anything? I got a .243 so compare it to that. Oh, the shotgun is an 11-87 20 gauge, and the round is 20 gauge reduced recoil slugs
I’m interested in getting the benelli m4. I just don’t know which grip is better. They have the option of pistol grip with stock or remove the pistol grip and just get stock. Which one is better when it comes to accuracy, stability, recoil etc etc. Also, do they only use slugs or will they also take 00 buckshot?
I’m thinking about getting a new/ good condition shotgun over the Summer, shotguns are the one thing me and my father don’t have many of, maybe only 3 or more, the ones I know of are a double barrel break action 20 gauge, a long barreled goose 12 gauge and one other which I’ve forgotten what it was. So I’ve decided by the end of Summer I should pick one up. I want something for just walking around in the woods, maybe home defense and SHTF "hey, you never know" I want a pump action, synthetic stock to start with, 12 gauge shotgun, I’ve looked at the Mossberg 500 and Rem 870 and I know there’s a lot of debates over them, and I’m not asking for that, just what you guys think of them, I want something to that has a lot of capacity, I’m not much of a shotgun man so I know every little about models, I also want one with out an internal choke so I can shoot slugs out of it, but possibly an adapter at the end to install one. And if any of you could give me almost a full review of any guns that might suit my needs would be amazing. Sorry if anything may sound novice level but like I said, I’m not a shotgun man, I just learned how a choke worked a few days ago. Thanks. Price isn’t a major deal but let’s try to keep it as low as possible.
I looked on Gunbroker and it looks like I’d be paying from 0-0 for a Mossberg 500
Yes I know this question has been brought up so much, too bad, but I’m not asking Vs of the two, just your thoughts and/or any other models, I’m not asking for self def so relax, but a high cab, pump action, reliable shotgun.
With as much capacity as I can possibly get out of a pump action, tube feed shotgun.
I think I’m leaning towards the Mossberg 500 or 590, but ammo’s a b!@#$ so I’ll have to find the best deal I can.
hi, the shotgun is advertised with a fixed cylinder choke, can i hunt with this? i hunt any thing from crows, rabbits, deer, ducks, pretty much anything that moves. also can i shoot any type of shells from birdshot to slugs? Sorry if it sounds dumb, im a rifle/handgun guy and know nothing of shotguns.
Looking for an affordable (under 0) pump shotgun with a shorter barrel mainly to keep for home defense but would also like to use it for deer hunting with slugs (mostly for thick woods and under 50 yards). Would also want a regular stock, no folding or pistol grip tacticool looking crap. Who the hell needs a laser on a damn shotgun. The ability to put a light would be handy but not necessary.
i just bought a 2ND hand shotgun and i want to use slugs . I have be told a lot of different things about chokes . How do i no what kind of choke my shotgun has if any?
I have a 12 guage remington 870 shotgun with a modified choke. would it be unwise to shoot foster slugs through this gun?
p.s. i dont want to buy a rifled slug barrel… thats why i want to use the foster slugs.
what kind of damage could occur if i shot a foster through a modified choke?
I need the best, most reliable, and powerful (legal in the state of California) autoloader I can buy. Assuming price is no object which shotgun is this. This will be a defense weapon against crystal meth addict armed robbers. Will I want 1oz slugs or 00 buck shots?
I live in an area where rifle hunting isnt permitted, so I need info about buying a shotgun, that would be capable of shooting slugs… I do not want a double barrel shotgun, I just want a single barrel. What can I expect to pay for a decent gun, but nothing too fancy I just want to shoot a deer or two… include some links if ya can.
I was brought up by my Dad to like hunting, but my Dad died and my brother can’t stand me. Also, I was brought up in Los Angeles, so I have no woods skills. I became close personal friends with a Ranger who works in the Angeles National Forest. I took a fifth grade class I taught up up to Chilao Flat on a field trip, and I met him and we hit it off. He sort of wished he worked with young kids, and I sort of wished I was a Ranger. Anyway, we are friends and do lots of things together.
You can’t hunt deer now, but in California, you can hunt Wild Boar all year round. You just have to buy a "Pig" tag and add it to your Hunting License. Well, my friend found a place you can hunt boar near a reservoir. And it’s not too far. The only hitch is you need to use a shotgun to hunt. My only shotgun is a Savage BSE double barrel 20 gauge I inherited, and my Ranger friend insists that won’t work on Pig. So he offers to loan me one of his shotguns. He tells me this is a real special shotgun, and then acts like he is doing me a real, real big favor. He then pulls out of a closet an ancient ugly deformed looking thing and tells me it is a ITHACA MODEL 37 DEERSLAYER, WHICH IS THE GREAT SHOTGUN FOR SLUGS EVER MADE. He is really impressed by this shotgun. I guess. It was his father’s. He is from Illinois, and apparently you can only hunt deer with shotguns (?), It’s what his Dad used to hunt with. He acts like merely letting me touch this shotgun is an act of great trust and responsibilty. I notice he is NOT hunting with it. HE is going to hunt with a new Remington 870 with a special rifled aftermarket barrel, and a raised rib for a scope, and HE has a handy dandy scope on HIS hunting shotgun. The one he wants to loan me is about 60 years old, the bluing is worn off, the action is so old, if you hold the gun barrel up, the pump slides down. It does have FIXED rifle sights, but the barrel is smooth.
So is this gun just special because it was his Dad’s? Or is the Ithaca Deerslayer really a mighty and legendary slug gun? This guy is a good friend, so I will play along if I have to.
Oh, and this thing is a 12 guage, and I weigh 121 pounds. And from what I am told, 12 guage rifled slugs are the hardest kicking things you can fire from a shotgun. Great…………can’t wait………
I got into shooting when I was about 9 but it began with high powered air rifle and since age 15 I wanted to purchase firearm. I decided to follow the law and buy one when I turn 18 and since then I been researching everything about rifles. I turned 18 already and want to purchase a firearm and wanted the shooter opinion. Should I bbeginwith a 22 or should I go straight for the shotgun I want to get. I just think it will be fun to plink using slugs and sshot shellsin the outdoor range.
I am looking for an airsoft shotgun that fires slugs. They are on redwolfairsoft but they are discontinued. I Am Wondering where else i might be able to find one.
What is the best shotgun scope for shooting slugs? I have heard people use everything from 4×32′s (typically a rimfire scope??) and on. Not looking to break the bank on anything fancy but would like to hear what experienced people have found best.
I bought a Maverick by Mossberg Shotgun recently with screw in chokes (full and Improved Cylinder). I would also like to take it deer hunting. A Few people have said that its ok with the improved cylinder choke but very bad with any other choke. I just need to know if i can shoot slugs using the improved Cylinder choke or if i need a separate barrel.
Hi I just bought my first shotgun since I just turned 18. I am wanting to know if my Mossberg 500 12 gauge is capable of firing slugs. It says in the owners manual that the 500 models are designed for 2-3/4" and 3" magnum shells. I bought a pack of winchester 2-3/4" 12 gauge shells and a 5 pack of 2-3/4" 12 gauge sabot style slugs. If you own one of these could you tell me if you have fired the slugs out of one and do they work fine. I havent used my gun yet and dont want to ruin it. Thank You and if you need more information to answer just let me know and I will e-mail you or you can e-mail me.
Its my first year hunting whitetail, i will be using a 12 gauge, 2 and 3/4" slug. I will be hunting a winchester model 1300 or a some savage semi auto. I just picked up federal truball, winchester super-X , remington slugger and winchester supreme platinum tip slugs. Whats the effect range? There both smooth bored shotguns. and open sights.
They all say 1 oz execpt the winchester supreme. It says 400 grains. How big is the 1 oz. whats that mean? im good with rifles but i dont know anything about slugs
Hey, I’m thinking about buying a pump action shotgun for home defense and recreational shooting. I hope I never have to use it for the first purpose, but in case I do, I’d like something that’s efficient and cheaper than spending 2000 bucks on a fancier gun. Here’s my one concern: I grew up around rifles with my dad and on my grandparents’ farm, but I’ve never fired a shotgun–just rifles, which obviously didn’t have the kick shotguns do. I’m a woman in my early twenties, but I’m in great shape, I lift weights, and I’m very physically strong so I’m not worried TOO much about the kick. That said, I know it’s definitely something I need to consider. I’ve heard it may be best to get a 12 gauge shotgun because of their ammo versatility and stopping power, and I can use a lighter buckshot to reduce the kick. But how negatively will that affect the stopping power? I’m hoping I can try out different options before making a purchase, but I’d just like some general advice. Any help greatly appreciated! Oh and also, if I buy different chokes, can I shoot both buckshot and slugs? How difficult is it to change shotgun choke tubes, and how much do they usually cost? Are they included with some guns? Thanks again for any help!
Hi guys im getting into the shotgun market since i want a home defense weapon other then my Glock 17. Now i have 3 choice in mind
Ithaca 37
Mossberg 500/590 ( whats difference between 500-590)
Rem870
Let me tell you what i am look at
I want it to shoot ALL 12 loads from 00-number 4. Not to give credit to my father( drunken asshole/long story/hate him) but he always had a Ithaca and loved it from what he told me. Then there is the big bad Mossberg which i hear have been having problems recently? Then the 870 but I prefer wood on the gun and LOCALLY havent found a wood pattern 870.
I also forgot to mention the Winchester 1300 Defender. I hear they are great but hard to find? So if you have any of these shotguns please tell me which you prefer. You can recommend another brand if you want.
Shooting slugs is something i can live without but would prefer it. Thanks guys
By problems i meant to say was There was a guy at my local gun show who said he had one with a warped barrel on it. Then i hear about them just not being reliable. I know they came in wood but haven’t found one locally.
to learn about the pro's and con's of each as well as the biggest mistake all the "heavy artillery" guys make when choosing "terminator ammo"!
(Hint: It has nothing to do with "stopping power" but it's nearly as important to your family that you get this right! Not doing so could cost you a lifetime of grieving that no law-abiding family should suffer...EVER!)Read More...
