I’m looking to keep it under 0… preferably between 0-0… and it’ll most be for target and skeet shooting, not so much hunting

i was looking at the mossberg 590 special purpose shotgun 9 shot. is that the best for me or should i buy a different one.
my uses are for home protection(just in case) then for hunting and target pratice(just shooting stuff not proffesional) is the mossberg good for this or not

I am doing a school project on shotgun shells. I am attempting to determine the amount of force, possibly in pounds, exerted on an object given the individual pellet’s weight and speed. Also, once I figure out what force one has, how does that apply to multiple pellets? For instance a single 1-ounce pellet going 1500 feet per second hits with so much impact, how would I figure the force of 8 pellets? Do you multiply the origional answer by the number of pellets? Any help finding the equation or web links related to this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I would need the answer to be in foot pounds rather than newtons.

Thampy- You are on to something but that equation seems to be for the initial force to get the bullet moving, I need the force it exerts on an object when it strikes it.

I have actually found the answer since I asked it, I want to see who can figure it out. The equation I am looking for involves taking the weight of a bullet in grains and it’s speed in feet per second upon impact, using these two variables you can determine the impact in foot pounds on the target.

Who can tell me what is a good buy. I want it mostly as a deterrent, so pump action, and if I ever have to use it i want non-lethal. Also, are rubber batons legal in NY? I think so but not sure. Tight on funds so ideally around 200 but could go up to 3 or 4.
in response to a few answers:

-I know rubbers can be lethal, depends where you place the shot.

-I don’t have a family, It’s just for myself

-You don’t know me, I’m not a timid little guy who would be so scared he’d drop the gun and let the other guy grab it, even if its true that I don’t want to be lethal

-I can guarantee you the person is not gonna shoot me after takin a rubber bullet to the stomach.

Really its just because I live in a college neighborhood and there’s frats and mobs of people and frequent breakins to steal TVs and other petty stuff. Any one of these kids would turn and run at the sound of cocking a pump action. If I had to fire a few shots off, I don’t wanna kill the kid maybe just scare him or take out a leg.
Look, nobody can be right because it is their own opinion. I didn’t ask for opinions about if I should use rubbers. What I asked for was a good priced shotgun. I will never have to kill someone. One guy said that he has practiced taking a stomach shot and then putting a couple rounds on target – with a vest. I don’t expect he or anyone else could do that without a vest, and I don’t expect kids to come into my house with a vest on. Someone said rubbers are good for crowd control. Yes, I know exactly – That is part of what I’m concerned about. As I said, there’s often mobs of kids around my block, frats, whatever, lookin to fight someone. I almost got jumped by 10 kids the other night on my own porch. I did not say I’m not willing to take a life, I just dont wanna look for the first excuse to take one. If I want to or need to I can and will, otherwise I won’t. Thanks for the answers I think im gonna go with either a mossberg 500 (persuader) or that cheap beretta

How far away can your target be from you?

I am doing a ballistics presentation on 6 different shells ranging from target load to buckshot, I will fire them each throught the same shotgun at a target and I need to find a target that can reflect the diffrence in damage done by each. I had origionally planned on using modeling clay but now a week from the project due date the person that was going to supply me with the needed torso sized block (150lbs worth) no longer carries it. Does anyone have an idea of something that I can use for 8 different tests and costs less than total? I have roughly 3 days to aquire it if I am to do the testing in time for the presentation. I have looked into plywood but each impact would be just one big-*ss hole, I need each individual pellet to be reflected. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am a new hunter and I am looking for a good 20 gauge shotgun. I am so confused about what type and brand to get. I am looking for a shotgun for all types of shooting…like target, deer hunting, small game, etc. Also can you use rifled slugs, and other loads in any shotgun? I really need some advive, please help and thank you!
I am confused about chokes…..what is the deal with chokes?

at a good sized target 50 yards away and have the slug hit the target with both barrels?
