I know cheap slugs is kind of an oxymoron, but I want cheap slugs for target practicing…….. Please do not say "buy a rifle"

I’m buying a Mossberg 500 pump shotgun. It will have a 20" barrel and the 8 shot tube, can handle 3" shells. It will be purely for home defense. Hopefully it will be used 1) never, 2) by me, 3) last resort by my wife. For use # 3, I want to be sure that a target in the "general direction" of a threat will be hit. #3 is why I’m moving from my favored Colt .45. I don’t give a #$@& about rebuilding the house … if it’s necessary to kill an intruder, carpentry and dry wall are a small price to pay if the gun gives us the winning hand. Any thoughts on a good load? I used to alternate a slug and bird shot in 3" Magnum form in my Remington 870 when in the home defense mode. That was arrived at by my gut feeling … never any experience, fortunately. Others probably have a more scientific viewpoint. Love to hear it.
Thanks,
Rich
Thanks for the answers guys – good info. I appreciate the comment about a "general direction" aim not being a good concept for even a shot gun. One likely shot is from an upstairs landing through an open foyer to an entrance … 20 ft. or so. Sure you have to aim, but the odds of a 2 or 3 inch group sure beats the footprint of a .45 ACP, under stress and low light. I think I’m leaning toward 2 3/4 with buckshot. Thoughts on locking mount systems? There’s another recent thread on the topic, but how about a 12v police cruiser lock (lots for sale on eBay) with a cipher pad and a combo you know by tactile feel? I’m more concerned about child safety than theft – If a guy had the time to crow bar it off the studs, it’s his … I just want family safety.

I recently got my first shotgun, a Mossberg 500 combo.
I know the basics, the difference between a slug, buckshot and birdshot but want to know about the different types of these loads….
Give me an overview, what is 00 Buckshot? what is light target? what is the most powerful load of buckshot? the least powerful load? ditto for birdshot….
What type of slug is hardest hitting? is there a difference between lead and steel shot?
non lethal slugs? etc..
Any information on ammo types would be greatly appreciated.
(LOL, I went to the gun shop and bought Winchest AA 8-shot light target ammo… then realized is really not a good ammo for home defense.. so guide me in the right direction for Home Defense ammo type) thanks!
Hey thanks for all your help… The websites are great! It will be really tough deciding who gets best answer…
I live in a VERY crowded city, in an upstairs apartment, so I want something like 00 Buckshot I take it….. also it is a very ghetto city, hence why I bought the gun…
(I know, I know, move out of the ghetto right? Saving for a house/just graduated from college… so the ghetto area is my only option at the moment… lol)

Hi Everyone,
I need a Shotgun/Boom Mic locally pretty fast, so I don’t want to order online. Any idea what kind of stores will sell it? So far I’ve looked at Best Buy, Walmart, Sears, Target, Radioshack, etc… also I’m looking for something and under. I don’t want a high quality one, I’d just like a decent or so shotgun mic. Thanks!

I was reading an article that described shotgun breaching rounds, and it mentioned that they deliver all of the energy into the target before dispersing into powder.
Would that make it an excellent choice for self defense, or not?

A person of gun knowledge told me to not bother aiming at the target but just point ;just point at the target. Is this the best way to defend myself? Does one need to aim a shotgun at all? Or is pointing it enough?

It has an cylinder bore and I will be using it for target and self defense at the house. But can I shoot any type of shells through the cylinder bore.

I have a 30" trap barrel on my remington 870 and i was wondering if i would be able to just add some sort of sight adjustment to use it for hunting birds/turkeys and actually aim accurately without pointing lower than the target

Is there any firearm that would do more damage at 10 feet than an 8 gauge shotgun with a slug? How would you compare this with a 50 caliber barrett sniper rifle at that distance? My initial thoughts would assume that the bullet from the rifle would penetrate the object, and the shotgun slug would stop once it hit the target, but would blow it up on contact.

I want a Shotgun for home security and target practicing. I’ve got my eye out on a Mossberg 500 or the Maverick 88 Home security. I also have my eye on a Remington 870; their price is pretty high.
Thanks in Advance.

First Shotgun and the guy at the store said try some xtra-lite target to get used to a shotgun.
How’s the recoil on this light load? What’s it used for except practice? Any good for self-defense in the home? Or at least one of those ‘first loads’ before putting a 00 buck in?

My buddies and I went shooting today, and after skeet shooting for a while we decided to set up a poor man’s tactical course. If I’m just standing there I can hit my target pretty well with my pistol, but it’s SO much harder to hit your target when you’re moving from place to place and trying to be quick. We were using our pistols and 12 gauges. Reloading the pistol is a piece of cake obviously, but reloading the 12 is so hard when you’re "under pressure."
So how do I learn to load the 12 gauge faster? Is there a certain stance I should be using when shooting pistol/shotgun? Anything else I should know about the sport? I’m right handed and right eye dominant, if that helps. It was just a lot of fun and I want to get better at it. Thanks
Oh yeah, I have no money to pay for any kind of classes

I usually mess around with my buds and shoot frisbees with my 12 ga pump sometimes I have to slam fire 2 rounds really quick to hit the target. I figured tough since I have 3 single shots shotguns [12 ga, 16 ga, and .410] I might go to the skeet/trap range and try my luck so what would be the better shotgun to use the 12 has a cylinder choke, the 16 gauge an IC and the .410 has either a full or modified. I was also thinking of buying a pigeon thrower, the Wal-mart has two different machines one for 19.99 and another for 50 something then the have a hand thrower I was thinking of buying one those so all my buds can shoot with out everybody for the use of a range.
your thoughts?

shotgun at a target, the two shots will end up different places? Let’s say i’m using a smoothbore double with rifled slugs. I’m assuming both slugs wouldn’t hit on the exact same spot. Is it okay to use rifled slugs in a smoothbore double barrel shotgun in the first place?

I’m looking to keep it under 0… preferably between 0-0… and it’ll most be for target and skeet shooting, not so much hunting

i was looking at the mossberg 590 special purpose shotgun 9 shot. is that the best for me or should i buy a different one.
my uses are for home protection(just in case) then for hunting and target pratice(just shooting stuff not proffesional) is the mossberg good for this or not
