What are some good home defense shotguns w/ tactical options?

March 5th, 2010 by eranio

Where can i find shotguns online that are already tactically set up? I would like a 12Ga. Pump-action With A red dot sight , laser, and bright flashlight. If there aren’t ones already set up are the sites where i can build on from plain gun to fully accessorized.
Not to undermine anyone’s suggestions they are all good. And maybe i don’t need all the stuff but i do want it! ill take it out shooting and other stuff not "just" for home. And your right i don’t need it all. But I want it so again any help would be great. Thanks!!!

If you can obtain a Mossberg 500 Mariner Bullpup with all the cool parts, you have one of the best home defense shotguns ever made.

You don’t want tactical as far as home defense goes. Sorry, but that’s the way it is. I guarantee my old Ithaca 16 gauge SxS sitting behind my bed will kill an intruder just as dead as a "tacticool" benelli. Only difference? I’m less likely to go to jail/face massive lawsuit if I use a gun that looks like my last resort. All those "tactical" guns do is give a money/fame hungry prosecutor a chance to put an innocent person away for a long stretch. That, and you won’t have time to flip on all of those accessories if the bad guy happens to be near/in your room, you aren’t going to bother with the lights/lasers/sights, all you are going to want to do at that point is make the gun go "bang", and the bad guy "thud". If you are still hell-bent on a tactical gun, then build one from a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870, They are easily "tacticalized".

In reality all the extra gingerbread is not necessary; just more possibilities for something to go wrong. Start at the first rung on the ladder and get a remington 870 pump or a mossberg and get very familiar with its handling characteristicics, shoot at targets at various ranges under varying conditions. After becoming very familiar with it then you can consider putting on a laser tactical drop compensating radar control left hand binary superimposed twin manifold bifurcated battery model mark seven centrifuge.

Remington 870 version has a telescoping stock that you can build on. Flashlights I can see their usage but it also reveals your position as well. I would say a tritium for the front post sight would work. K.I.S.S.

Mossberg 500/590 and Rem 870 are the best for the money and come fully tactical less lights and lasers which can be easily attached with a clamp. I suppose some stores would trick out the gun for you but,you would pay double for the options. Get a rail if you want a red dot which is only good for slugs. Using buckshot or birdshot you don’t need a scope or reddot.

    Remington 870 express super mag.

Any firearm can be used tactically.

My 20 ga semi would fair better than any of those high-tech fancy shotguns because I’ve shot it more.

Go with a gun that you’ve shot before, one your comfortable shooting. You don’t need all those bells and whistles to be able to protect yourself and others.

It’s home defense, not battle in Fallujah.

If you want a shotgun (not my first choice but if it’s what you want), get a 12 ga pump with about an 18-20" barrel that holds 5-6 shots. Full stock, no pistol grip needed. They are inexpensive and virtually fool proof. How dark is your home? If it’s light enough to see an outline, it’s light enough to shoot an intruder. I guarantee that if you ever do confront an intruder in your home, you won’t have time to be messing around with a laser sight or any kind of optics. It will be purely instinctive shooting. A flashlight? There are many choices out there with easy to use mounts for the barrel of your shotgun.

    That will do the trick.

Most of the time you have to buy the shotgun and the accessories separte. I would look at impactguns.com for some accessories such as surefire laser/flashlight combos. Of course they are a bit pricey. I will also say that a 20ga is much better and plenty good for home defense. A lot less kick in line of recoil. I will also suggest a handgun as well.

The shotgun’s role is holding down the fort such as a safe room where only one door has to be guarded.

The handgun’s role is searching the home, gathering family, etc.

A handgun requires one hand to operate making it usable while on the phone with police, finding family, holding a flashlight, opening doors, etc. A shotgun would have to be lowered to make one hand usable.

Also the handgun does not need to be lowered or raised to look around corners (you would not want to have the barrel of a shotgun peak around the corner giving away or position and then stick your head out). A handgun also gives less to the intruder to grab onto if they get close enough to grapple with you and the weapon. A shotgun will give him or her more to hold onto.

I hope this helps. The Shotgun v. Handgun came from Guns and Ammo: Book of Personal Defense; The Role of the Handgun. I forgot the authors name and the page number. I lent the article out to a friend.

I would look into a mossberg in line of shotgun in 20ga. Don’t need a 12ga to be a "man."

Get a Remington 870 Express with the two shot extension with an 18 inch barrel and mount a 6 round side saddle when you get the chance. Forget the reddot and laser, the flashlight is ok to get but adds weight. All you need for sights is the little tiny bead sight it comes with.
