what are some of the best 20 gauge shotguns for $500 and under?

I’m looking to get a 20 gauge for hunting and etc, you know pheasants and rabbits, squirrels etc. And I haven’t gotten a new shotgun in awhile and obviously I’m looking for a new one and I’m looking for people’s opinions of the best shotguns that aren’t tactical looking and are more of a classic hunter look. I appreciate your opinions and perspectives very much, thanks.

Remington 870 is fine for your use at around 300.00. Get a barrel with screw in chokes at around 21-28"

Remington 870 I do believe comes in 20 ga
and I think Mossberg 500s do to.
Just depends what ya like more. They are well under $500.

I would buy either a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 Express, if I was buying new.
$250.-300.
I would not buy anything new between these and $500. You just don’t get enough to justify the extra price over these two. In fact, most of the shotguns priced between these two and $500. aren’t as good.
If I was buying used I would look at the Remington 1100, and Remington 870 Wingmaster. You can find many of these in good shape between $300.-$500.
P.S. I really like Remington 1100′s. It is more complicated than the others, so check it out good. But I think that they are the best I’ve listed.

$500 is plenty of money for a quality repeating shotguns. For that kind of money, you should be able to buy a new Remington 870 Wingmaster and possibly even a Remington 11-87.
The MSRP on the two Remingtons that I mention is about $600 each. But, you can often find them on sale or clearance in the neighborhood of $500, with some looking.
Some large sporting chains will also "price match" what others are selling for. So, even if you can find an advertisement with these guns listed, they will usually match that price.

Boy are you in luck! You can get a shotgun that will last you a lifetime for about $200. I own seven Remington 870′s in all of the gauges and love them all. Check em out and be sure to get one with screw in chokes. They’re awesome and you won’t be sorry with this purchase. And shop around. You’ll be surprised how much price variation you will find.

Remington 870 express mag, 2 barrels, one rifled one with rem choke.
If you want to go closer to your limit, the 870 wing master is a beautiful shotgun. Great blueing, great stock. Atleast on my fathers. It was bought back in 1970s. And is still in great shape.

Your best bet is to check the used rack at your local gunstore. You can get about any good used 20ga for under $500. If you want something new try Mossberg, Remington, Charles Daly. Stoeger makes good 20ga double barrels if you want a classic look.

You can find a used 20ga. Ithaca Featherlight for well under that price.
A used Ithaca will always be a better gun than a new… well… any other shotgun producer’s product.
