What are “Sport loads.” for a 12 gauge shotgun commonly used for?
Can they be used as bird shots? What about home defense? What can I use them for?
Thank you all for your answer’s! I just baught a Mossberg 12g for home defense because of how bad things are getting, and I didn’t really know the difference. So now I do! Thank you!

Bird shot? — Absolutely….
Home defense – NO — Sport or target loads have inadequate penetration so are a poor choice for home defense…..
Stick with buckshot for that…..

Sport loads is what (when I was on the local trap team and shot competitively) the folks who shot 12 ga’s used.
I’m sure you could use it for birds, I’ve done it (with a 12 and 20 ga).. and anything is better than nothing in regards to home defense. Remember, it is not ideal for home defense.

Sport loads are promotional loads sold at a relatively low price. They are what you see in early September ads, and are good for target practice
and dove hunting. They are typically made of non-premium components:
low base cases and softer shot, moderate powder loads and simple wads. They are the "Mcdonald’s Value Menu" of shotshells and they serve their purpose of getting hunters into the store and giving shooters
cheaper blasting ammo. Good for doves & rabbits, kind of light for home defense with only 1 oz.-1 1/8 of #6 or #8 shot in 12 ga. At room distances
almost any shotgun load centered will do damage, but there are better
defense loads and that is a separate question.

A sport load is a round that you should use for something besides hunting or home defense. While I am sure that you could shoot birds with sport loads, I usually use them for target practice or to help people get used to the recoil of a 12 gauge. Practice makes perfect and shooting cheaper sport loads at logs, cans, bowling pins or whatever helps me get some experience with my shotgun so that if I ever find myself in a real home defense situation I will hit my mark. It could be used for target shooting, trap shooting, bird shooting, things of that nature. I would not recommend it for home defense but yes something is better than nothing if it’s the only thing you could get. I know some people recommend like bird shot for HD but that is ultimately stupid. If you are using your shotgun for home defense try to carry a decent load, I know I have read of ppl who would recomment 00 Buck shot for home defense and more power to you if you feel safe using it.

Everything, and yes they will kill an intruder for home defense because of the distances involved inside the home, or apartment.*

Sport loads are 7 1/2 shot low brass used for target shooting and bird hunting. Sport loads are not recommended for home defense but I think getting shot with any kind of shotgun round close up would not be pleasant.I use 7 1/2 shot for clays and doves,6 shot game loads for small game. I also keep some high brass #4 shot for home defense.

They are used for bird shot, clay pigeon shooting, trap and skeet practice, and other just shot practice.
For Home Defense use Buckshot.
