any short barreled 12 or 20 guage shotgun will do the trick.

Find a short (18 or 20 inch) Pump action shotgun,,,you can buy one that way from Mossberg, Remington or just about any maker.

I’d stay with a full buttstock… the folding stocks and pistol grips look trick and cool… but they are hard to hit with… and if it comes to it- a big chunk of wood makes a pretty good club.

Loads… indoors lots of folks like to load a #6 or 7.5 low brass bird shot load… at room sized ranges birdshot will shred a body up and takes the wind out the sails of you attacker. Birdshot runs out of steam if it penetrates a plaster or drywall wall and souldnt punch through to wound or kill the folks in the next room or apartment.
Slugs and heavy buckshot can over penetrate and carry through walls.

    My house shotgun is a H&R 401 Pump 12 G…. we re-worked it to 18.5 inches… it has a sling and a butt cuff ammo carrier. Cost?..about $100 bucks.

Mine stays loaded-empty chamber with a trigger lock on…in a good spot I can get to as I retreat to a advantageous area in my home.

I shoot this gun a few times a year at room sized ranges.

Tactics…leave clearing your house to the pros.. and movies.
Let the bad guy come to you…Call 911 and get the Cav on the way… let the 911 operator know you are armed.

When the police show up…unload the gun and do not meet the officers armed… they dont know you from Adam and wont know who you are until they sort things out.

More than you asked… hope it helps

12 gauge pump shotgun loaded with number 4 bird shot is very lethal, and will incapacitate, or kill any intruder.* Buy a good used Mossberg pump shotgun and save a lot of $$$.* A New shotgun does not shoot any better than a good used one.*

If I had to do a room by room search i’d much rather have a handgun

I live in cincinnati, ohio. Any shotgun is good for home defense. If someone sees a shotgun they should be scared especially if it is pointed at them.

How much do you want to spend is a factor. Since it sounds like you will only be protecting your house/family you should check out a remington 870. It is a very reliable gun, my father has had his for 20 yrs. and never a problem this will run for about $615.

For shotgun shells there are different types of shells. There are slugs which is used for deer hunting its more like a rifle bullet and then there is a shell that is for a bird shot which is 8 or 9 little beads in a shell that will spread out in a somewhat circle when fired. This would give you a better chance of hitting your target. But if you don’t want him around anymore then use a slug but using a bird shot is easier to hurt him/her . Both types of shells can kill someone but its easier with a slug.

Also look into a 9mm pistol or .45 most police officers use these types of guns. It is easier to handle a pistol.

The answers above are all good.
But just to add too it, I would prefer a pistol-grip shotgun specifically for home defense. In fact, we are looking into them.

Handguns are nice if you are comfortable with them, but not essential.

I’ll agree with the above. But if you are paying more than $350 for a Remington 870, you are getting ripped off. Go to walmart or your local chain sporting goods store. Watch for sales on mossbergs, remingtons, and pretty much any of the other pump action shotguns they sell. Even the Chinese ones will work just fine for what you are looking for. Whatever you get, go practice with it. A lot. If you are planning on using a gun for self defense, you better know how to use it. They are not magical talismans that ward off bad guys. They are a tool to help you defend your home and family. And just like any other tool, you need to learn how to use it properly. Besides, it is a good excuse to go play at the range.

Remington 870. It is tough, reliable and mine patterns especially well. I have the Remington 870 SPS Sure Shot Synthetic Turkey with the ambidextrous thumb hole stock. I love mine, especially with a full dressing of Realtree APG HD. It has fully adjustable fiber optic sights, which are great in low light. I will say, with 31/2" Magnum Turkey loads it is a beast. Mine really likes Federal Premium 31/2" #5 Mag-Shock Turkey Loads. All you need is one well placed shot, it will make Ol’ Mr. Tom take a dirt nap. Trust me I am quite certain that you put one of these into the chest of a man and it would be devastating.

    Some folks will recommend the Remington 870 — Avoid — Here’s why…
    http://members.tripod.com/~jth8260/870.html

Keep it loaded with 2 3/4 inch buckshot —- Avoid 3 inch cartridges – To powerful, avoid slugs as they can go thru walls easier endangering neighbors…

    Use this stuff or similar……

Because of your background, you can’t own a gun.
