What are the differences between the Remington 11-87 and 870 model shotguns?

November 10th, 2009 by eranio

Is the 11-87 semi-automatic where the 870 is a pump model?

Whis is better for both home self-defense and hunting (with a slug?). Thanks.

The 11-87 is a semi automatic shotgun, meaning once the chamber is loaded, pull the trigger, ignite the primer and the shotgun will automatically reload itself. The semi-automatic reloading action will help reduce the felt recoil when the weapon is fired. It takes longer to clear a jam or misfire with this weapon.

The 870 is a pump shotgun. You physically work the action on the forearm to place another shell in the chamber. The action does not reduce the felt recoil of the weapon, but it is easier to clear a missfire or a jam.

Both are excellent weapons and suitable for your desired goals.

870 wont freeze up in cold weather hunts like an auto will. i have only herd about the 1187 never even seen one, i think it may be a fancier spin on the 1100? i like the 870 express for the purposes you listed. very reliable, chamber 2 3/4 shells or 3inch mags or slugs. very easy to strip and clean and reasemble. can shoot clays, deer, bear, hog, coyotes, birds of all types, and yes burglars.

You got that right.* It doesn’t matter they are both good for using slugs, and home defense.* When using slugs use a skeet or improved cylinder choke for best accuracy.* Use number 4 shot in a shotgun shell for home defense, its the best for the job.*

Remington 11-87 stands for the model 1100 and it was introduced in 1987, either model will serve your purpose just fine as they both dependable and affordable……

Remington 11-87 is recoil operated, while the 1100 is gas operated, they are both semi auto, if i had to choose one of them, it will be the 11-87 hands down, More cleaning is done for the 1100 and it can damage the mag tube with alot of usage, cause the gas hits on the mag tube. Remington 870 is a pump action, rather than a semi auto. Remington 870 beats both the 11-87 and 1100, cause you can shoot just about any load you can get you hands on with out worrying about it not cycling.
