choke tubes add verstility to a shotgun… and tubes are fairly cheap… the right tubes let you shoot skeet and games to steel shot at duck and kill turkeys at a distance.

They let you do all this with barrels in the 24-28 inch class… Lots better than the old days when you had to buy a whole shotgun to take advantage of indiviual chokes and lenghts.

I started with a M12 Winchester years ago…30" full choke… and learned to shoot rabbits to geese with it…plus shoot a few slugs every year as a deer gun. Choke tubes are the best thing since slice bread and canned beer.

Remington 870 but you will have to buy different chokes for different loads

A Mossberg 500 12-gauge, 26" barrel, will work for all of these. But really, buying the different barrels for the different types of hunting is part of the fun, Why short yourself?

    Remington 870 Express.

26 inch barrel with a modified choke and Turkey Choke.

    Rifled Deer barrel

They sell a combo. Buy the Synthetic as it is better for rain and concealment from wary Deer.

    Check out their site.

So….you want to buy a shot gun? As long as you have a liscence and your not a cyco murderer then your fine. And you won’t have to you use barrels or chokes. This is the 21 century, not little house on the prairie.

remington 870 express with a 26 inch barrel varaible choke.

For most of the time you will be using modified choke, but for turkey put in a full choke.

For all the things you mentioned, which comprise a wide range of hunting topics, your best bet is a good sturdy 12 gauge pump shotgun….something like a Remington Model 870, which are numerous in various gun stores. You can learn more about it at the below link.

I like the Mossberg 500, or the Maverick which is made by Mossberg. You can buy the Maverick for less than $200 and have plenty for an extra barrel. I suggest only one extra barrel for deer hunting with slugs, but you could use the stock barrel. 500′s are so reliable they are used in law enforcement. Because they are pump and not semi auto, there is less chance of losing them if Big Brother confiscates semi-autos. A shotgun can also be ideal for home defense, and the loud clunk of the Mossberg pump can be very intimidating to a burgler!
Update – With 4 votes for the Remington 870 I’m going to have to try one. Doggone this is going to get expensive.

No one gun is the best to do all those things with. The best I can suggest is to get a Remington 870 12 gauge with a 28" barrel and a modified screw in choke for it. To effectively shoot slugs at much range, you’ll have to get a rifled barrel. To shoot turkey, you’ll need a full or extra-full choke. Sorry to disappoint you, but there ain’t no such thing as one gun and barrel that will do it all.

For general purpose shotgun you have many choices. The Mossberg 500, Remington 870, Stoeger, Binelli, Franchi, the list goes on, just be sure to get a 24" barrel to handle Turkey. Generally you can get any of these models with a full set of chokes which take about 30 seconds to change if you are slow.
Bang for your buck? Remington 870 or any of the pump action Stoegers in 12 Ga. with 24"=26" barrel will do the trick.

An excellent all around use hunting shotgun would be the Remington 870 Express 12 guage pump……

As you can see here Remington offers many many application specific shotguns…. One for every purpose….. My personal feeling is an all around shotgun is up to the task that most of these specialized shotguns can do…. I really feel it’s 90% shooter and 10% gun…..

Another excellent choice is the Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump…. This field model with a 28 inch barrel is nice…..

Mossberg also offers several shotgun models for every purpose…..

I will stay out of the Remington verses Mossberg argument — You will note each brand has legions of followers….. I happen to like Mossbergs more but you may find the Remington has the right "feel" or "pointability" for you….. I highly recommend you stop buy your local sport shop and handle both shotguns, shoulder each one and see what you think…. Either one will be a satisfactory choice……..

The reason some guns come with the option of "a bunch of barrels or chokes" is that it’s cheaper, though not quite as refined, compared to buying a different gun for each different kind of hunting. You’d want at least a full choke for turkey hunting, and an improved cylinder choke for slugs used in deer hunting. Perhaps your best option according to the criteria youv’e listed is to shop the used gun market for something inexpensive, like a Savage-Stevens 311 side-by-side 12 bore, which you could probably find without much difficulty with full and modified chokes, and you could have your gunsmith open the modified choke just a tad for the slugs (or if you don’t shoot many slugs, just go ahead and shove them through the modified choke).

Remington 870′s are the all american gun, and serve an all around purpose. They are priced between $250-350. I owned one for years and it survives mud, rain and abuse. Most come with Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full chokes when purchased. If you plan on deer hunting however, you will need a rifled barrel for slugs which run $200-300. Make sure you look at shell chamber length. 2 3/4"-3" is general purpose, 3 1/2" Chamber is great for ducks & long range turkey.
