    I always liked my M16A2. Though I did miss the full rock and roll of the A1.

    They are light, accurate, easy to maintain and hard to screw-up. Every soldier can carry a huge amount of ammo — 840 M16 rounds weigh about as much as 3 MREs, or nothing really. The same weight in 7.62 ammo would get that soldier about 120 rounds.

    The M16 line makes their cold war counterpart, the AK-47, look like carnival booth junk.

    They do have one problem — operator error can mess them up. Failure to use the forward assist is the reason behind 95% of the complaints about the weapon.

    An m4 is a pretty good assault weapon.One of the best handguns is a desert eagle.{but it has a really bad recoil}

    The best long range rifle would be the .308 (7.62×51) bolt action,
    The best assault rifle would be the AR15 .223 (5.56mm)
    Iam not sure about a shotgun handgun, but a shotgun would be great for close range support.
    My personal favorite for the long range rifle is the Gew 98 7.92×57.
    The best bolt action rifle in the world.

    There is no easy answer to your question as it depends on the situation. You can use a sniper rifle hunting dear but it would suck for self defense. A 12 gauge shotgun will destroy anything in close range including the people in the next apartment. A 50 cal desert eagle will stop a bear but can also knock you out if you can’t handle the kick. The most important part of what makes a gun best is how well you can use it to hit only what your aiming at. I saw a quote that says it best "You won’t rise to the occasion but sink to the level of your training" . I hope that helps.

    P.S. I’m partial to Belgian made Browning shotguns.

    Well at the apex of the weapon family would be a NUKE for assault.

    However if you are talking man portable AND non nuclear then something in the sniper class of rifles or cannon. (Yes cannon, the Serbs had a 20mm beast and the U.S. tinkered with a 25mm ‘sniper’ weapon!) Of course you could also go with a man portable ATGM such as the Milan, Javelin, Sagger, ETC ETC. Shotgun-10 to 12 gauge sized with either slug (penetration) or shot (area / grouping) or flechette (body armor penetration / velocity) and a large capacity to load rounds quickly such as a drum attachment. Then there’s the whole question on how the shotgun operates (automatic, pump, lever action ETC ETC.) As for handguns depends on many factors. Are you looking for velocity (speed of the round) or mass (size of the round), Then are you looking to dump all of the rounds energy into your target (one entry wound with no exit wound for maximum internal bleeding) or does your round have to penetrate body armor first and therefore have to have a harden core such as tungsten?

    Really too many variables. List what your target is and what is available to get a better, more refined answer.

    Best assault would be an ar15, try the DPMS SASS rifle platform. That could be your long range rifle too caluber is .308
    Shotgun you cant go wrong with a Mossberg 500 they are very customizable for your specific need. Use #4 shot
    Handgun. Try an FN Five-SeveN yes spelled like that. It fires a 5.7mmx28 rifle round with a 20 round magazine. FN makes great firearms, most of what our US military uses is FN make like the M249 SAW and some of the m16s. They claim its accurate and lethal at 300yards. Pretty nice for a pistol.
