    Mossberg 500

well to be honest for a first timer i’d go with a New England or H&R single shot only cost lil over 100.00 mom/dad like that point they can go to 3 inch so you can shoot the larger rounds say for turkey an geese. You can get quick enough to get two rounds off if you needed just takes practice. you’d become more efficient to say the least with your shooting. The gun isn’t as bulky neither.

id say a single shot remington

you forgot to give us some very important info:
    - how tall are you?
    - and how much do you weigh?

that will help a LOT with people helping you out on that- depending on your height and weight, a 12 ga shotgun may not be suited for you… yet
i’m not saying for you not to get a 12 ga.. but those 2 questions i asked will help a whole lot

have you shot other gauges also? that would help a lot with you getting accustomed to the recoil from a 12 ga- but by no means am i saying that you can’t handle it- i recommend, shooting a few 20′s and then a few other guns with a little more kick that way you’ll get a idea of what you’ll be shooting- if you’ve shot a 12 ga before- great :) that puts ya a good bit ahead lol

what kind of action are you looking into?
a pump, semi-auto, o/u (over/under) or a side by side- a pump, o/u and side-by-side have a little less kick than a semi-auto would because the gas and the ‘force’ from a semi-auto ejects the spent shell- where with a pump, o/u or a side-by-side, the shooter has to cycle the rounds instead.

    wooden stock or synthetic?
a wooden stock absorbs more recoil and to some people, it looks better than a synthetic, but a wooden stock is a little heavier than a synthetic stock is
a synthetic stock is a little lighter, but that means that the recoil is a little bit more. and some people prefer a synthetic stock over a wooden one

do you want a gun with fixed choke tubes or inter-changeable choke tubes?
i strongly suggest getting a gun where the choke tubes are interchangeable so that you can shoot a LARGE variety of things- you can shoot skeet, birds, turkey, deer, etc- but all require a special choke tube- there’s 4 or more different kinds available (4 is the most common) and they each can be used with shooting many different ‘things’

you may also want to go a head and take a hunter safety course since your 13, that will "solve" a good few things and you can go a head and ‘knock’ that out of the way so you won’t have to worry about it later on

—– Candy Hollands — if you are really a ‘farm girl’ then you’d understand how important a boy and girl’s first shotgun/rifle is
and just because we own firearms doesn’t mean we’re from Iraq… and looks like your the one who ain’t too bright too..

—– Tony B- 13 is NO WHERE too young to have a firearm or any kind of gun- having one shows how responsible and mature a boy AND girl is and we’re exercising our 2nd Amendment

—– Eu- yep! a shotgun! get over it, like i said to Tony B, we’re exercising our 2nd Amendment. and the kid’s parents are NOT "pseudo-parents". Sounds like yours were because you weren’t around firearms obviously because you’d understand that the guy OR girl who’s parent’s are gonna be getting them one knows how responsible and mature their child is. And is he going to kill someone? get over yourself! NOT everyone who shoots/owns a gun kills people- those are criminals who do that, and those are they type of people (you included) who give gun owners/shooters a bad name

to yall 3 and others like them- firearms are JUST TOOLS!
no different than a car or a hammer but no one says "your too young to use a hammer", etc

If your parents have taught you how to handle a gun safely and responsibly, then I think your old enough.thats when my father gave me my first shotgun! It was a remington 870 12gauge and I used it for squirrel, rabbit, quail, coyote, and deer! Thats the gun I would recomend!
It has had thousands of rounds of ammo run through it in the 23years I have had it,with no problems ever!
Be safe, and have fun hunting and shooting with your new gun!!!!!!!!!

i have a BENELLI SUPERNAVA its a great gun for almost any thing but its a little pricey but it will last for ever and hahaha your 13 and dont have a gun yet im 13 and have shot 6 deer and tons of other stuff…..and have fun with a 12ga as your first gun

There are a number of brands and types built for youths, but a 12 guage may be more recoil than a 13 year old would care to tolerate. Were I to recommend a specific model I would go with the Remington 870 youth in a 20 guage, the shorter stock and lighter loads are better suited to shorter arms and lighter body weight.

  9. Big Long Bald

Get a remington 1100 semi automatic. Its reliable, durable, powerful, good quality. My cousin even dropped from on top of a jeep, it fell 10ft, no broken parts;no dings. Its great, get one

Get the Mossberg Youth Model 500 Field Grade in a 20 gauge, instead of the 12 gauge made by Mossberg.* The 20 is light weight with moderate recoil, and more than capable of harvesting Big or Small Game the same as the 12 gauge does, but without the extra weight and heavy recoil of the 12 gauge.* Its a Pump Shotgun.*

    Mossberg 500 20 gauge…..

wow! look at all the city raised folks in here….talking bad about a teen owning a shotgun-wow!

as for you my man it depends on how big of a fella you are-if your a smaller guy you might want to go with a 20ga(less recoil/kick) but if your used to a 12ga or your a bigger boy mossberg and remingtons are real nice and not bad pricewise(especially right now,ive noticed that rifles are going up in price and shotguns are coming down a hair)
also depends on what your going to use it for and what action you want-do you want a pump action? semi auto?? also to you want a wood stock?synthetic stock? folding/collapsable stock? would you rather have an18.5" barrel? 24"? 28"? ect-theres alot of factors in any gun- style/action/how many rounds you need it to hold/type of stock/barrel lenth and if you want to shoot 3.5" or 3" or 2 3/4"-do a search on the web with all these factors you want and it will give you a better idea of what YOU want-i like mossbergs(500/835 pump) and remington 870(pump) but you may not like those,so look around-a gun shop will give you a good idea too-you can actually hold the guns and see how it feels to you ;)

  14. Aidan B

Im 14 and im looking at the mossberg 500. Ive done tons of research on it and it definately seems like the best one for starting. Its only about 250

  15. Dave

not gonna recommend a specific gun,

but it’s so important to hold the gun before you buy it..

try a youth model or two, maybe it’s more comfortable than a full size

  16. Intersect

a medium length barrel Remington 870 and you can get the extra slug barrel.
