Semi Automatic 12g slug with a drum magazine 20rd. Thats a dirty girl. Oh and make sure theres a wicked sharp muzzle brake on the end so you can stab when you run out of ammo.
I like .410 honestly… loaded with 4′s, you can knock a man over quite easily without the blast/kick of a 12/16/20 gauge… then again, I’m rather fond of the Ithaca SxS 16 gauge propped up against the wall behind my bed…
I would opt for a Mossberg 500 with a 20 cylinder bore and an eight round extended magazine. A good gunsmith can remove the interlock so if you hold the trigger it will fire every time the action goes into battery.
You can buy this gun with two barrels and a reduced magazine so you can do some bird hunting or break some clay as well. It is a nice combination gun. If you go combination leave the interlock fully operational.
Additionally the gun has the advantage of being affordable. I think the last combo I saw was $399 on sale price.
EDIT: Sorry; get that in 12 Ga and #4 to #1 Buckshot is my favorite. Nothing larger than #1 Buck, the pellet count starts to fall off fast and the individual pellet energy is enough go through and do more damage behind the target.
Mossberg 500 in 20ga…however a good handgun is a better choice for home protection.
Both shotguns and handguns have their roles in home defense.
The shotgun’s role is holding down the fort such as a safe room where only one door has to be guarded.
The handgun’s role is searching the home, gathering family, etc.
A handgun requires one hand to operate making it usable while on the phone with police, finding family, holding a flashlight, opening doors, etc. A shotgun would have to be lowered to make one hand usable.
Also the handgun does not need to be lowered or raised to look around corners (you would not want to have the barrel of a shotgun peak around the corner giving away or position and then stick your head out). A handgun also gives less to the intruder to grab onto if they get close enough to grapple with you and the weapon. A shotgun will give him or her more to hold onto.
I hope this helps. The Shotgun v. Handgun came from Guns and Ammo: Book of Personal Defense; The Role of the Handgun. I forgot the authors name and the page number. I lent the article out to a friend.
If price is a concern and it is only for home defense I’d go with the Mossberg Maverick. That is this guns sole purpose though, I may be wrong, but I dont think there are any mods for this shotgun.
I personally have the Mossberg Persuader. Its the mossberg 500 with an 18" barrel. Its definitely a keeper. Its the model 500 so I’m looking for a slug barrel and a regular long barrel for skeet. There are plenty of mods for the 500 frame.
Remington Model 870 or Mossberg Model 500 in a 12 or 20 gauge pump shotgun.* Use number 8 or 9 bird shot for self-defense ammo for shooting inside your home or apartment.* It is deadly without endangering others in the home.*

The main answer you will probably get here is either a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 in 12ga.
Personally I like the Remington 870 with #4 shot
