December 13th, 2009 by eranio

Im on the market looking for a shotgun that can be customized easily to become a tactical shotgun. If anyone has any idea on a certain model, please tell me, thank you.

Upon this slew of Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 recommendations I will tell you that both offer a supremely large amount of customization options. When it comes down to it, feel them both out and see which you like best (Mossberg or the Remmy). Winchester also makes a good shotgun in the 1200 or 1300.

If you chose to go with either of these shotguns for tactical use only (not hunting) I suggest you get a model with at least a 6 round extension tube. ATI also makes a variety of amazing adjustable folding stocks for the above brands.

Both Mossberg and Remington make their own tactical versions from factory. I’d recommend the Mossberg 590 with the 9 round tube extension though there are many variations. Follow the link here to see what I’m talking about

The Remington 870 has a ton of sweet variations that can be viewed on the right hand side of the site. An honorable mention would be the Remington 1100 TAC.

Finally, if you’re willing to do a slightly more advanced customization, get a Saiga 12. Based of the AK platform, this magazine fed shotgun can be fired as fast as you can pull the trigger and has reduced recoil of other 12 gauge shotguns on the market. It can be loaded with magazines containing 5, 8, 10, to 20 round drum mags. Reload is easy once you get a hang of the AK loading technique. Barrel length is either 19 or 24 inches- go with the 19 for a tactical. Any customization you can do on an AK is transferable to this model.

The only disadvantage of the Saiga 12 is you need to convert it to get to this stage. factory equipped it comes with a toned down trigger, "sportsman"stock, no pistol grip and no rails. Personally I like the AK sights, but some people opt to put on and H&K set. For more info on Saigas, check out their forum where you can join and ask your own questions.

The facts are in front of you. Now you get to decide.

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870…both are very good reliable shotguns with tons of parts available.

  4. OkieRoadhunter

The Mossberg 500 or a variant would be your best bet for customization and reliability.

    Remington 870
    Mossberg Model 590

Just remember, with the Mossberg 500 there ARE NO magazine extensions.

This is due to the way the barrel attaches to the end of the magazine tube.
Since the barrel has a lug that screws into the magazine tube there’s just no way to attach an extension.

The only way you can get a bigger magazine, is to buy a longer new factory magazine and a new barrel with the mounting lug farther down the barrel.

define tactical… I bet you breech a lot of doors in your neighborhood dont ya? Walking point often?

Any short shotgun with black furniture and a bead blasted metal finish will satisfy your "tactical" urges.

Only consider the Mossberg 500 or Mossberg 590 series of shotguns….

Here are the technical reasons why……

And to those that say the Remington 870 is a great shotgun I will agree… For hunting — BUT – When the crap hits the fan you really want a Mossberg….

I own both Mossberg 500 and 590 shotguns as well as 2 of the Remington 870 7 shot synthetics…. The Remington occasionally have ejection or feeding jambs… A jamb or malfunction is the last thing you need in a home invasion…… My Mossbergs never give me a problem…

Yeah Yeah – Ive heard all the arguments — The 870 has a steel receiver, feels heftier, etc… But what it comes down to is reliability….

If the Mossberg shotguns are the only shotguns heavy duty enough for Iraq then they are plenty up to what ever your going to use it for….

I also should point out – The Mossberg 500 is plenty heavy duty enough for most uses… If your not knocking down doors in some middle eastern country then believe me the 500 is fine…

TACTICAL?…. Careful careful… Most of that tactical stuff is silly nonsense that will actualy get in the way in an emergency…. Lets say you get in a situation you need that shotgun for defense all those add ons, flashlight / laser switches, collapsable stocks etc can catch on clothe’s, seatbelts, drapes, etc…. Keep your shotgun simple… and please dont get a pistol grip only — you will find you cant hit anything with those….

    I recommend these…..
