depending on where u live and whats available you can get a surplus gun like a Yugo m48 a kar 98 or a SKS for pretty cheap along with the ammo (only buy a Yugo or Russian sks Chinese make shit guns). That or if you wanna invest in a damn good shotgun that will last your life get a Remington 870 http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/model_870_express_super_magnum_synthetic.asp this 1 is mine it chambers anything and is very dependable.

2 Choices……
Rifle = Ruger 10/22….. Prices start about $200…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruger_10/22
Shotgun = Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump….
There will be some folks that will tell you that you don’t target shoot with a 12 gauge shotgun – Baloney!!! — I regularly target shoot with a shotgun loaded with slugs… Some folks think I am a little nutty for doing this but its actually quite fun and satisfying —- I shoot at 10, 12 and 15 inch steel plates hung from chains to 100 yards…. Paper targets are lame and you dont get a "feel" for the firearm at distances with paper…..
This Mossberg 500 12 gauge field model is regularly on sale in my area for under $250…….

Load it with 2 3/4 inch slugs and practice away!!!!

Both of those are great guns, I own them both, I would also like to suggest if your looking for a cheaper, more powerful rifle, Big 5 has a Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r bolt action rifle. I got mine for 90 bucks. And that’s the everyday price. As for the mossberg I love mine. I also have the mossberg silver reserve O/U, it’s about 500 buck but when you buy one you’ll find yourself buying more down the line… Have fun

Get a ruger 10/22 and a couple of 30 round clips and a speedloader. Lots of fun and easy to reload, but all that will cost you more like $300 before tax. The standard 10/22 is $200 at walmart. And you can get a box of 550 rounds for $15. Can’t beat that price for a fun day of shooting

Any Brand that is within your price range, and in good used condition.*

Norinco SKS
you got a mossberg 500, 7.62x39mm recoil is nothing compared to 20 or 12 ga shotgun.
its accurate enough to hit a beer bottle at 50 yards iron sights. with a scope same bottle at 75 to 100 yards.
7.62x39mm is very cheap by the case of 1000 rounds. $220 per case.
the SKS is a great rifle, extremely reliable, simple, easy to clean and fix.
a Norinco SKS is generally between $125 and $300.
