Depends on what you are trying to do. Do you want to kill? Shoot skeet? Target practice? Go deer hunting? Also, do you intend to fire a lot of rounds, or only a few. Different loads result in varying degrees of recoil, which can, for some shooters, affect their shot (some people will anticipate recoil). A 3" .00 buck load will have more recoil than a 2 3/4" low brass trap load. I suggest looking for your local gun club (especially shotgunners), and go from there. Chances are really good you will pick up some great tips from the shooters there.

Close in defense ranges, prettty much any shell you pick will do the job. The shot won’t spread much in the given range. It also won’t go through walls and kill your neighbors. I’d suggest #4 or #6 shot in a 2 3/4". Anything bigger than #4 buck is kinda stupid unless you plan to defend your outdoors, too.

General small game, #4 or #6 shot, 2 3/4". Larger game, 00 buck or slugs.

Decent weapon you picked up, sir. Those are a lot of gun for the price.
