I need something thats going to stay in the house. What are some good models, as well as what are some desireable features needed in a self defense shotgun?

The only shotgun to consider for home defense is the Mossberg 500…… Benelli’s are over-engineerd and expensive, H&R Pardner pumps are Chinese junk based on the Remington 870 and the 870 has reliability issues in a gunfight….. The new Winchesters, Charles daly defense and Stoeger defense models have absolutely no track record with police departments or the military……
The best in the world is the Mossberg 590 – But its a bit too heavy duty for the house if you ask me… If your not knocking down doors in downtown Afghanistan then those are a bit overkill…. The Mossberg 500 12 guage defense models are fine…..
I own them all, 870′s, 590′s, 500′s, 930SPX’s, and many many others….. The 500 is perfectly fine….
Some will blather on about the Remington 870… Ignore them… Here are the technical details as to why the Mossberg 500 shotguns are better…..

Desirable features?…. Almost NONE!…. I don’t know if you are aware of this but there has been this tactical craze lately that’s gotten out of hand to the point of ridiculousness….
Just a plain basic model like these are all you need……

If the best will only do then these basic model 590s are nice…

Avoid pistol grips, flashlight holders, lazer pointers, collapsible stocks, bayonets, Air, cruise and tilt….
Just basic shotgun and learn how to use it….
I own them all and the best are the Mossberg 12 guage pumps… Take a look at some of my shotguns here…. I’ve tried them all……

Double barrel Shotgun!

AA-12 Fully automatic shotgun.

I used to use a double barrelled 12 bore shotgun for rough shooting, it also gave me a feeling of self confidence as far as protection was concerned, they look pretty menacing.
However, in the UK they have to be kept in a locked steel cabinet, I don’t know how quick I would be getting it out if I heard a burglar in the middle of the night.
Also in the UK you just can’t shoot a burglar just because he breaks into your house, YOU would be the one in trouble if you did.
All in all, with the price of the licence going up and up I had it decommissioned, it still looks just the same as far as a burglar would be concerned, and if the worst comes to the worst I can hit him over the head with it.
If your in the USA you can buy a Gatling Gun in the supermarket.

1- it should have a short barrel
#2- what ever you are comfortable using.
The pros to a shotgun for home defense is that its big and carries lot of power-good!
The cons to a shotgun for home defense is that its big and difficult to handle inside the home-not good!
This is why most will desire a pistol for home defense.

Remington 870 Express
Get it in a gauge you can handle.
12 or 20. Shorter barrels 18 inches are best.
Pumps are very reliable.
I have an 870 Express Supermagnum that I would bet my life on.

Remington 870 Express in 12 or 20 gauge. You can’t be the quality and action of an 870. The one desirable feature would be to get a short barrel, the minimum allowed.

One that will fire. Everything else is personal preference.

Straight-forward:
Before deciding on a shotgun for home defense buy a solid reliable handgun! The reason is that a handgun is more practical for the majority of home defense/invasion situations. By now I am assuming every self-pre-claimed gun enthusiast on here is thinking I am idiot because:
1. Handguns are underpowered compared to shotguns
2. Shotguns are more versatile because of the variety of ammunition loads.
3. Handguns should be only used to fight your way to a long gun!
Well the above three statements are absolutely right! However, you can’t sacrifice firepower for practicality! And handguns are more practical than shotguns for home defense!
The reason handguns are more practical is because they are concealable!!! Most home invasions don’t happen at night. They happen in broad daylight. The intruder might be the person ringing your doorbell. You could always answer the door with a shotgun in hand but your next visitor might be the police if that visitor turns out to be the cable man. More importantly because handguns are concealed many intruders don’t expect the occupants to be already armed. In addition handguns require a single hand to fully operate. Allowing you to use your other hand to call the police, turn on lights and etc..
The truth is everyone likes to think that they will be prepared for a life or death situation – able to grab their weapon of choice, have enough time to present and aim the weapon. However, in the real word things happen fast and reaction is always slower than the assailant’s action! If you are ever faced with an armed individual you will need to make a choice: comply to his terms (where there is no negotiation) or make the decision to put your life in your own hands. This is a split second decision that will impact the rest of your life! Shotguns are great for things that might wake you up at night that is why I believe a shotgun and a handgun make the best combination for defense as the final tier.
As far as what shotgun is better between an Express or Mossberg the debate quickly becomes academic. Both have well deserved solid reputations and you won’t go wrong with either. I completely disagree that a home defense shotgun needs to have a short barrel. Home defense is not tactical room clearing. Nothing in your home is worth your life to defend except your life and your families. Staying put in one place watching a single entrance gives you the best advantage possible and any length barrel will work. Lastly you meet every criterion for self-defense.
Items that I recommend for a self-defense shotgun are: An aftermarket recoil pad, Sling (in the event you need two hands so you don’t have to put the weapon down) with a quick release (in the event there is a struggle for the weapon) and a light! A light is useful because you might not have power and it’s always a good idea to clearly identify the threat. Finally buy lots of ammo and practice so you can pattern the shotgun.
“Taticool” shotguns if used for defensive purposes can be a liability. Imagine the jury impressions. Lastly that expensive “Taticool” shotgun will be confiscated and only returned after the trial which may take years! And for a self-defense situation you won’t need anything fancy.

compact
low recoiling
high magazine capacity
lots of firepower
reliable
and I know of just the thing!
Saiga 20 gauge semiautomatic shotgun!
compact as an AK47 (about 34 inches long)
20 gauge is low recoiling but still has alot of firepower
10 shell magazine capacity, detachable
loads and loads of firepower
and since its basically an AK47 but in 20 gauge, its very reliable.
