Sure they are protected--but if they are destroying your property(chickens) then they can be shot. #4 or 6 shot should be sufficient.

You'd better check with the local wildlife agency to confirm this, but I'd bet $10.00 that it's illegal to shoot hawks.

All birds of Prey are a protected species. But if they weren't, I would use a 12 gauge in number 6 shot as they were flying within 50 yards. or a 22 long rifle hollow point if they were perched on a tree limb within 75 yards of me.

You have no business shooting hawks. I know this is a nuisance but keep the chickens in the coop.
These are birds of prey and therefore government protected.

think about this, how does a 10,000 fine and/ or 5 years imprisonment sound?

get a propane gun used to scare crows off of gardens, keep the chickens under cover. if you're hell bent on shooting something best bet is to use blanks or a paintball gun and tag the heck out of them.

for them to qualify as a nuisance animal, a state or federal game warden must observe the hawks and ONLY the game warden is able to make the call to shoot them. if you have one in possession, and i mean even a single feather and you're not part of a Native Tribe, its a fine or jail time varying on state levels. Here in Texas, its 30 days and $1000.

Hope you make enough to cover the fines and have enough time to waste that you can do the jail time.

Shooting the hawks is the wrong answer.

The correct answer is to install some tall poles around the places where the chickens are getting taken at. Hawks requrire a nice big open area to make a kill - they will not swoop down around poles and other things that can hurt them.

Simply putting a few peices of nice looking fence material in the middle of the chicken run would also work fine. Anything that breaks up the wide open spaces will work great.

All your aunt needs to do is simply ask other people who have owned chickens, geese and ducks what they used to keep the hawks out. Just ask at the feed store or ask other farmers.

You don't hear about anyone else shooting hawks do you? That is because it is not the right way to solve this problem. You shoot a hawk today....... another shows up in a week or so and you are back to square one. Add a few poles and fence cover - voila! - no more hawks for the rest of your life.

That - and shooting hawks is a $10,000 fine - jail time - and is a felony in most states. When the state is finished with you - the federal government might send you a new fine and more jail time. You will loose your right to vote, and, loose your right to own a gun too.

Killing hawks is a federal violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, punishable by up to a $5,000 fine and six months in prison.
