Before you decide check the trajectory mid-range at 150 yards and you may decide a mortar would be better.

Consider a shotgun with a rifled barrel…. Use Sabot slug ammunition…. and practice an awful lot…..
Realize most folks that hunt deer with a shotgun take game at distances less that 75 yards…. 150 Yard shots are possible but only for the more dedicated hunters… If you think your going to pull the shotgun from the closet a couple of days before deer season and expect to drop a deer at the 150 yards range then expect to be disappointed….
Consistent accurate shots to those distance takes a bit of practice….
I suggest you shoot at metal targets, NOT paper targets…. Start at the 75 yard point and over a many sessions over a few weeks you will easily be able to pull it off… Realize recoil can be objectionable after awhile – so only shoot about 20 to 25 rounds persession…. Get a shotgun that has a cantilevered barrel and mount a shotgun scope on it……
Like one of these…..

If less recoil is what your after then I still recommend a 12 guage…. A semi-auto may be a better choice — But be sure to get a deer gun with a cantilevered barrel…..
This Mossberg 930 is a decent choice……

as well as this Remington 11-87 deer gun…..

Use this shotgun scope…….

I get excellent results with this same scope…

100 yards is considered the max for slugs in a shotgun. I use several brands of sabot rounds in an un rifled barrel for accuracy, but prefer 12 gauge to a 20.
shoot safe

if you don’t have a rifled barrel you will have a lot of fun shooting at deer and missing them at 150yd. so try to save a little $ and buy a slug barrel then buy the Remington Premier AccuTip Bonded Sabot Slug they will be accurate at 200yds and they make a awesome hole when they hit and the deer wouldn’t even have time to think. but if you put 1 in a 20ga. it wouldn’t make it that far even though Remington says it will i know Ive tested it so buy a 12ga if you are afraid of kick just buy a recoil pad and it will feal like a .410
But with a 20ga have fun trying to get the trajectory right it will be like shooting a deer at 200yds with a bow

A rifled slug barrel is a definite. Take a look at the cantalevier barrel, they are rifle with a weaver rail for scopes. Using sabot ammunition with also increase accuracy and range. For longer range shots 20 ga is very efficient because the smaller bullet weight will drop less. But watch out becasue some 20 ga slugs are just as heavy as 12 ga slugs. Go with a 3/4 oz slug, they fly much faster and straiter. As far as 2 3/4 in or 3 inch just make sure what ever you shot you can easily control the recoil. Practice also helps. One last thing consider using a muzzle loader. In most states you are allowed to use a muzzle loader during shotgun deer season. It may have a reloading disadvantage but the modern ones with a scope can drop a deer at 250 yards no problem. I dropped an 8 pointer weighing in at 165 pounds with my black diamond muzzle loader at 200 yards and he just toupled over. They are much more accurate and are .50 caliber which are devasting

right off the bat… you may be "accurate" to 150 yards… but realistically, a shot closer to 35-75 yards will be were most of the work is done.
Deer hunting is not a video game.

you’ll want a 12 first off. i had a box of hornady’s that claimed they could shoot flat at 150. i’m not sure i’d trust that. so i switched to brenneke black magic. its 600 grains as opposed to the 300 of the hornady. but its only good up til 75 yards or so but it packs a mean punch. so i got a 243 for longer shots.
