What is the best type of shotgun shot to use when crow hunting?

February 27th, 2010 by eranio

I have been using a 12 guage with high brass 6 shot and i’m not using a choke. When crows are 20-30 yards away i put the beed on their nose and and shoot and i miss. do i need to lead my shot more or get a different size shot like 7 1/2 or 8s.

You could bump it up to a 7 or 71/2. I would likely switch to an IC size choke. You may need to lead them a bit more (aim slightly in front of them as they fly) If you cant use lead, then try switching to Black Cloud or Heavi Shot, its more effective than hi brass.

Waht length shell are you using? longer means more pellets, but more recoil. At 30 yards, your pattern is going to be about three feet diameter, so the added pellet count increases the density aof the pellets.

instead of the 12 gauge go to smaller like 16 or even 20 with shell shots or 3 inch mags if people still sells those also try leading the shot depending on how fast they are going

If you are shooting your shotgun without a choke tube installed, you will ruin your shotgun barrel. If it is a fixed choke, the barrel will say how the barrel is choked. If you have a cylinder bore 30 yds may be a little far to be shooting. You are probably using the best ammo for crow hunting. If they are flying when you shoot them, you need to lead them several feet to hit them.

You need to lead them more depending on the angle and distance you are shooting at them.* Best type is a Pump, or Semi- Automatic.* Number 6 shot is fine.*
