Shotgun question…

What is the difference between a Mossberg 500 and a Mossberg 590? Which one is better for defense?

Your Model 500 is more of a basic 18 1/2" barrel no frills model. The 590 is a special purpose model in several different configurations. (Marine Coat (rust resistant), heat shield, ghost sights, or a combination of these.) While you can customize a 500 or get some modifications from the factory, the 590 comes in many more configurations. Which is best depends on you. I would recommend handling a few different examples to see what fits you best. Check out the different sight options. Mossberg is American made. It might be reasonably priced, but it is by no means an inferior product. It can get the job done just as well as a shotgun costing several times as much. Plus they are simple to work on and very dependable. If they can stand up to the abuse of a deployment in Iraq yours will be just fine on the home front. Be aware that while a pistol grip configuration might look "cool" for home defense, it takes some getting used to the "bite" it gives your hand from buckshot loads. You might be better suited with a regular stock for controllability reasons. You can’t kill what you can’t hit…

Here’s the companies’ website that breaks it down:

I don’t know much about Mossbergs but as far as shotguns go a Denal Striker Cobra or SPAS12.

Benelli probably makes the best though, like the M1.

You shouldn’t buy this Swedish brand. You should stick with American brands.
