The key differences are the 870 express usually is set up for hunting with removeable choke tubes, longer barrel, and lower magazine tube capacity. Whereas the HD version has usually an 18 or 20 inch barrel with an extended magazine tube for more capacity and a cylinder bore barrel.

The express is a hunting gun, with a bead on the end of the vented rib.
The home security usually has a pistol grip.
Express has a longer barrel than the security.
The express can come in wood or synthetic stock.
    The security is usually synthetic.
The express will take a 2 3/4 and 3 inch shell.
The security is usually a 2 3/4, but they also make the gun to shoot 3 inch shells.
The express will usually weigh more than the security.
The express comes with a plug in the gun, the security doesn’t, unless it shoots 3 inch shells.

The 870 Express has a choke in the end of the barrel and depending on what kind of choke it may limit you to what kind of ammunition you can use… The security model like the 870 7 shot synthetic can digest buckshot, slugs, trap / skeet loads, bird shot, anything ……….. The express has a longer barrel, the security models generaly have a larger magazine tube to hold more cartridges…….

Heres the 870 7 shot with an 18 inch barrel security model….
