Shotguns are mostly used by infantry, military police and special forces. Shotguns are very good for clearing buildings with. Shotguns are usually only carried on "special occaisions" which is why you don’t see many photos of soldiers carrying them.

In close quarters where a rifle is less effective. They were used in Viet Nam in the heavy brush, and I am sure they are useful in cities where most of the shooting is short range.

We used to have them in the Coast Guard for close quarters combat situations. The Police use them too. They are a good intimidation weapon to prevent anyone from trying something.
And to "xoTwilightxo" below, if you "don’t know" then why in the world would you answer a question? There are more important things in life than points on YA.

We had them in Iraq. I was security and used them for housing clearing. Used the slug to easily open doors. Like I said, I am a Marine and I used a Benelli semi-automatic shotgun.

Soldiers (usually Army infantry) going door to
door in Iraq have used the 10 gauge shotgun
for taking out door locks

I have seen plenty of soldiers with a shotgun as their issue weapon. Some infantry some not, if the unit has them in inventory someone will be issued them. When I left Iraq in 04 the 12 gauge pump was not an uncommon sight.

The Coast Guard still uses the Remington 870 with 00 buckshot and slugs – and we are experimenting right now with non-lethal rounds, but they aren’t authorized quite yet. Our Law Enforcement and Maritime Security Teams use them.
