This shot gun is a pump action that weighs six and a half lbs
takes four rounds of 20 guage shela in the tube magazine, barrel length is 21 inches, the total length is about 40 inches, the length of pull is 13 If you don`t know what ammo your weapon takes then you should consider buying ammo only after you have gone to the NRA for some training
Triple 000 buck shot is my recommended choice for home defense. It has more pellets than double 00 and they are a smaller caliber (.25 or so). This is better for use in a home under a stressful situation and has less likelihood of penetrating walls.
If I understand you question correctly, you want to know what shotgun shells to use for home defense.
If it is a 12 gauge, then I would load it with #4 buckshot. The noise of racking the slide of a pump shotgun is one of the most recognizable noises in the world. It scares the h*ll out of whoever is facing you. If you actuall have to pull the trigger, buckshot has massive stopping power, and an effective range of only about 60 yards, so the risk of missing and putting a bunch of holes through your neighbor’s house is greatly reduced.
If it is a 20 gauge, then I would load with slugs.
As to you last question, an 870 is a pump action shotgun. A single shot shotgun is a break action where you must breechload a new shell after every shot. By definition, a pump shotgun is not a single shot, since you have spare shells in the magazine. If what you meant to say is that one trigger pull = one shot, then you would be correct.
It depends on what results you want for your home defense. If you use number 9 shot as your first shot, then you will not kill anybody unless they are in point blank range. Wounding them first may be what you want and they will leave. Then if you followed it with any buck shot then you will kill the intruder. The choice is yours. But I agree, you need to take a hunter safety course so you will understand how to use the gun and what type of gun you have. Go to a range and use it. Get familiar with it. Then if the opportunity comes you wont have to think about how to use the gun.
