What kind of shotgun should I get for roughly 200-300 dollars?

August 1st, 2010 by eranio

I want a relatively compact pump shotgun. I am pretty experienced with guns but I do not know much about shotguns. Could someone give me a crash course on shotguns. like the difference between 12 gauge and 20 gauge. and also any recommendations for a brand and model shotgun in my price range. Thank you.

    Greg,

The difference between the 12 and 20 gauge is power. The 12 gauge is more powerful and due to its overall popularity comes with a variety of ammunition types. They are also chambered all the way to a 3.5 inch shell, which holds a lot of shot and powder and kicks like a 10 gauge. The 3 inch magnum will take care of any needs you have in the field, and the lighter 2 3/4 inch loads will handle anything around your home.

The 20 gauge is a smaller shell that holds less "shot", but can still get the job done. It is popular with kids, women and men who don’t care for the recoil of the 12 gauge. This is the second most popular shotgun round and therefore it is available in a multitude of load types.

Your budget does place new pump action shotguns at your disposal. Some already in "tactical" condition, especially if made by Mossberg or Remington. You will need to shop around. You can also google the different styles to see what you need to search for. Remember that Mossberg and Remington have a lot of companies that offer modification parts. You can buy a used one for less money and slowly "jazz" it up with tactical parts, if that is what you’re into. Otherwise get yourself one with a 28 inch barrel and adjustable choke and you will have a life time of hunting experience with one of these fine weapons.

In that price range, you can get a 12 ga. Mossberg 500A with a 18" barrel for about $260.

mossberg 500, or the remington 870 to good affordable guns to suit all your needs, and it depends on what your hunting but i would go with the 12 guage i would not get one with a 18" barrel though those are for home protection, most come with 27" barrel.

You can get a single shot shotgun from pretty much any gun shop or pawn shop for $150 new or $75 to $100 used. I prefer the 16 gauge.
