Get a 20 gauge to start out with and if you like it and as you grow work your way up to 12 gauge.

I went through this with my wife, she wanted to shoot clays so she tried every shotgun I had and couldn’t really find what she wanted. I took her shopping and showed her a Stoeger Single Barrel Classic in .20 ga., it is a break open of modest preportions but has a vent rib and interchangable chokes {same ones by mossburg uses} along with a quality recoil pad. Two hours later we were at the range where she shot 19 for 25 with no practice run ! It fits her wonderfully and although it only cost $110.00 with tax it shoots every bit as good as any $20,000 dollar shotgun I have seen. It has been trouble free even after many thousands of rounds and now she regularly hits in the 23 for 25 catagory. I would suggest at least picking one up and see if it fits you. They also make an overunder with an adjustable stock but it’s quite a bit more {and heavier}. Go to http://www.stoeger.com.

the best gun for a begginer is the simplest one. Look for a simple and easy to use gun.

since you are 13, you should probably shoot with a 20 ga.

The simplest shotguns are single barrel break or hinge action

for barrel lenght, just keep in mind that a shorter barrel is easier to move
