What would be the best home defense ammunition for a 12 gauge shotgun?
Something that would be effective at, say, 20-30 feet from an 18 1/2 inch barrel but wouldn’t overpenetrate (I’d hate to hurt someone in a nearby room) and wouldn’t kick so hard that a man of moderate strength couldn’t handle it?

My home defence is a lazy over eating sharpei so any1 will do

beanbag shots, or rubber pellets….it will bruise the shit out of them, but wont kill them. And if you wanna go for the kill, you can go Billy The Kid Style and load a roll of dimes down the barrel…talk about a mess…

Do not use double or triple odd buck, use a bird shot, but expect them to live with that, so expect to be sued for it.
Also keep in mind that almost as many people are killed by their own guns in the hands of the bad guys as kill the bad guys with their guns.
Be careful

Buck shot. You need something that will penetrate a couch if that is what your attacker is hiding behind, so your ammo does need to be able to penetrate some things. That means it will also penetrate plasterboard, so you simply have to be careful where you aim. There is no load that you can put in your shotgun that will not penetrate plasterboard under certain conditions. If it wouldn’t, it wouldn’t be of much use.

Check this new ammo out:

Too bad it is only available to licensed personal, law enforcement and military units right now.
Anyways:
I would go with 3" X1 Buck shot. It’s my favorite and is a standard in my HD Shotgun. However, there is a catch, my wife is the only other person who lives with me and I know at all times what room she is in.
If you don’t live alone or have more people in your house, especially in a rancher style, one story plaster and drywall house I would go for something like #6 bird shot. Even though at close range it will eat up drywall like it isn’t there it has a lot less chance of going through several of your walls where as a slug will eat up a chunk, if not all of the way through your house and possibly into a neighbors. You would be amazed at how little a house will stop!
Here is another site you would have fun looking through too. I was trying to get my hands on a few of these different variations in shells. One of the coolest things with a shotgun is the diversity you can have in ammunition types!
Hope this helps and you enjoy:

Duck shot

#4 shot will do fine at your ranges. More than lethal enough without over penetration.
Be aware that if you miss and hit the wall behind your intruder, that #4 will punch through (so will anything else) but should be greatly slowed.
Recoil won’t beat you to death, much lighter than slug or buck shot. Cheaper to practice with as well.

20-30 feet? How big is your house? Buck shot will rip right through 2×4 and drywall. Think about going with about a #4 steel shot duck load. It’s less expensive than buckshot and will really f**k up someone standing on the other side of a room. You will get a nice spread out of your short barrel.

The best choice recommended by law enforcement is number 4 bird shot.*

It depends. Buckshot will give you excellent power and penetration, while birdshot will have a wider spread and less penetration(meaning it would be less likely to pass through a wall and injure another person in the home). I keep my shotgun unloaded, but have both birdshot and slugs nearby so I can load either or both depending on the situation. In most cases I would prefer birdshot.
If you have moderate strength don’t worry about the recoil (as long as you have a stock and not just a pistol grip). I started on a 12 gauge when I was thirteen years old (and much smaller) – you should have no problem even with magnum loads (make sure your barrel and chamber can handle the loads though).

they say that birdshot is actually the best shot for home defense…I would make it large birdshot though if not buckshot though.

Buckshot. Not smaller than #1 and 00 preferred.
Any ammunition with enough energy to penetrate a human body well enough to be a reliable stopper is going to penetrate walls. There is no way around that fact. Do your best not to miss, and be aware of what is on the other side of any walls in your line of fire.
No offense intended friend, but if you have trouble handling 12 gauge recoil, you need to rethink your defensive strategy. Have you considered a .38 S&W SPL revolver? They are handy to use, have much less recoil, and most loads are not bad about penetrating walls. An S&W M-10 revolver, or M-15 revolver would have low recoil, excellent reliability, excellent accuracy, and very reasonable prices in the used gun market.

6 shot is all you need

I’d say no bigger than bb shot for something like that.

00 buck
This is what more people would recommend. It has the most stopping power. But the large sized buckshot can punch thru drywall easily is you miss. This may be the most powerful, but isn’t always the best choice. Its is a poor choice for those who live in a densely populated area (suburbia or apartment) If you do live in such a area make sure you got thick walls. 6" or more will reduce the chance of it going thru and hitting someone else. But it doesn’t mean it won’t always stop in the wall.
#1 – #4 shot
This size offers larger shot and more stopping power, and reduced penetration into your walls and furnishings.
#5 – #8 shot
This is the smallest shot. If your walls are really thin or you have serious concerns about hurting people on the other side of a wall if you miss, this stuff with not punch thru thin interior walls. But the small shot size also lacks penetration into people and less power.
Generally all of the above will stop people at ranges of 30 feet or less. The more people there are around you, the smaller the shot size you should use, down to #6 or 7.5. unless you live in a dangerous area, most people will immediately leave or run away after the first shot. If not, I suppose you could always shoot him again. That way you can both stop someone effectively, at the same time, never actually putting anyone else in harms way.

If you live in a house or apartment with family members, roommates or neighbors only a thin wall away, I’d recommend #4 birdshot.
If you have thin walls and buckshot overpenetration poses a threat to people in adjoining rooms or units, it’s your responsibility to use a cartridge that won’t endanger innocents.
Virtually all armed confrontations in homes occur at about a distance of 15 feet, give or take 5 feet. At this short of a distance, #4 birdshot will be a very effective one-shot man stopper.
Anybody serious about home defense with a shotgun will own either a semi-auto or a pump with at least a five round ammo capacity.
Single shots and doubles aren’t the best choices, because of the very real possibility of misses and/or multiple perpetrators.
Always keep the magazine fully loaded, with the chamber empty.
If you live in a single family home where overpenetration does not present a threat to anyone, then I recommend #1 buckshot.

The best shotgun ammunition would be a 2 3/4 inch 9 pellet buckshot… A regular size guy can handle the recoil from this ammunition…… SEE THE BELOW LINK for a huge article on home defence and tactical shotgun ammo…. It doesnt get better than this!!! And I will use this oportunity to to recommend a shotgun. Get a Mossberg 500 Pump — Persuader / Cruiser models…. DONT forget – no matter what ammo you buy – be sure to take your gun out now and then and practice…
