What would be the best pump shotgun for deer hunting (using slugs) and home defense (using shot)?

November 19th, 2009 by eranio

I am looking for an affordable 12 gage pump shotgun for multiple uses; home defense and hunting deer and turkey. I want to use slugs for deer hunting but I know that slugs would not be a reasonable home defense ammunition. What should I look to purchase?

Take a look here…… Mossberg offers a 500 model 12 gauge pump that come with 2 barrels….. The long one is for hunting — When you get home put the short one on for home defense……

Mossberg makes excellent shotguns….. Don’t let the inexpensive price fool you. These are really nice shotguns……

Ammunition for home defense?…. Buckshot of course…. 8 or 9 pellet 2 3/4 inch is perfect…. Here is whats in my Mossberg shotgun……

only stupid people use guns…instead of causing destruction for your own pleasure why not do something productive. why dont you go plant a tree or try to read a book.

You have to camps to choose from. They are Remington’s 870 and Mossberg’s 500. Both will do the job. The Mossberg has an aluminum receiver making it lighter and a proper tang mounted safety easily used by a right or left handed shooter.

Most want a short 18"-20" barrel length for defense. While hunting likes a little longer barrel out to 24". Sometimes shotguns are sold in combo sets with two barrel just for consumers like you. If you get a one barrel shotgun make shure it has a screw in choke, most all do now, but make sure. This will allow you to change from an open choke (cylinder bore) for slugs and defensive loads to a tighter choke (full or even extra full) for turkey.

    remington 870 for both.

remington makes a combo kit for the gun. one barrel has a cantilever scope mount on top and rifling in it; the other is a modified smooth bore.

you can get a full or extra full smooth bore for turkeys, the modified for small game and those pesky home intruders.

use # 4/5 shot for home defense. ( leave the chamber empty so you can rack one in after you shout you have a gun.- nothing says get out like a shotgun clearing its throat and ready to sing)

brenneke makes a good sobot slug, as well as remington and winchester.

For Turkey and home defense you want a field barrel and for deer you want a rifled barrel. So I would buy a combo that sells both barrels together. I would recommend a Remington 870 Super Magnum. It shoots 3.5 inch shells for turkey and 3.5 inch buckshot would make a burglar wish he didn’t step in your house. Mossberg 500 are sold in combos also, but the are not the best made gun. What I would recommend you do is go and hold both guns side by side. I’m pretty certain you will like the fell of the 870 better. It is just a better built gun. I own 3 870′s In 12 GA, 16 GA, and 20 GA.
