What would be your recommendation for a good(price and overal reliability) shotgun used for clay pidgeons?

You may take in to consideration I will be buying a used gun and not a new in box one, so figure that fact into the price consideration…if you will.

    Bound’s hubby here:

I am presuming you are looking at Trap or Sporting Clays as opposed to Skeet. You need a quick follow-up shot you may not get if you are not familiar with handling a pump gun.

For a used shotgun for clay pigeons … I would suggest a semi-auto … you will have a good second shot for doubles in trap, or follow-up shots in sporting clays. Also, consider shotguns that still have factory support and replacement barrels …. that way you can get a 24" barrel for skeet if you so desire.

    Good guns to look for:
    Remington 1100 12 ga.
    Browning Gold
    Winchester X
    Browning Double Auto.

You could also look for an over-under, bit the price (even used) may be at least twice that of a used 1100.

    Good luck!

That depends what clay shooting sport you are taking on.

If you’re shooting trap, you will want a trap gun.

If skeet or sporting, you’ll want a sporting clay or skeet gun.

There are differences between trap and sport/skeet guns.

You also have several choices as to the action of the gun.

You really need to provide more info, to be helpful.

In general, the Remington 1100 is a good gun – reliable and used ones can be had for $500 +.

Well, the Mossberg 500 is a cheap reliable gun, but im njot a fan of it. I like the Remingotn 870, not so cheap, but more reliable. My unlce has a Mossberg, and it is old, and if you pump it too hard, it could go off sometimes. Overall, i would pick the Remington 870, its around $225 or something like that. The Mossberg is a little cheaper.

If you are on a budget and want used, I would go with a beretta 391 its like the small block chevy for clay sports

A Remington 870 Express is about the best you can get, for the money (it’s worth getting one new @ around $230).
If you’re into automatics, a Beretta is a good option.
Also check out the Benelli Nova — ask around — but Benelli’s are excellent guns, in general, and the Nova is reasonably priced. By the way, used automatics aren’t terribly cheap, but they’ll let you shoot a lot more, given the reduced recoil.

Me? I’d get an 870. I’ve had lots of Mossbergs jam, never jammed an 870, and they’re a great VALUE.

pick up a used remington 870. not to expensive, and very reliable, sweet-handleing, and easy to clean.
