What would you use to shoot a goose, assuming you wanted to eat it afterwards?
So I want to hunt geese and afterwards, I want to clean the goose and eat it. My father-in-law recommended a shotgun, but wouldn’t that get a lot of shrapnel in the meat?
Should I use the shotgun anyway or is there something else that would work better?

It’s illegal to shoot ducks or geese, or any migratory game bird, with anything other than a shotgun that holds 3 shells or less. This is a Federal law, so it applies to the entire USA. Besides, you could never hit a flying goose with a rifle. Bird hunting is what shotguns were made for.
You won’t get "shrapnel" in the meat. You might get steel pellets, but we all deal with that. Pull them out when you’re cleaning it, and chew lightly.

shotgun is the only legal means of harvesting wild geese. Yes, you do get lead pellets in them, but they are easily removed when you clean the bird. If you miss any, you will find them when you start eating and can dispose of them.

A shotgun with bb or #2 pellets. Most pellets will come out when you clean it. Most good hunters know how to shoot without damage to the bird. It only takes a few pellets or 1 to the head to kill.
Don’t worry…..just cook and cut up your meat…..a few pellets may come out when cooked as well. Just don’t bite real hard…..its not toxic or lead.

Waterfowl should be shot "on the wing" or in flight to be sporting.
Shotguns are the effective tool to do than. The down side to shooting birds and fowl for food is the occasional lead pellet you find at dinner time.

Well as the individuals have said its illegal to hunt a goose with a firearm besides a shotgun but what about a slingshot you can put a rock/ marble/ or steel ball in there and look out you got a Goose’s worst nightmare unless you were intent on using a gun I’d use a Slingshot with a few marbles or ball bearings
