If I use one of my shotguns I use a modified choke tube and #4 or #5 shot. #6 at close range tears them up too bad.
I agree with the answer of using a .22. I use my .22 pistol a lot, but if I’m in an area where I worry about the range of a .22, I use a scoped single shot rifle with .22 CB caps made by CCI. They’re not much louder than a high powered pellet gun, but very potent. I have my single shot sighted in with CB caps at 30 yards and try to keep my shots under that range.
If you want to stick with a shotgun, try a larger shot size. It might be worth it to pattern your gun at different distances with different sized shot on posterboard sheets, just to be sure you don’t have any open spots in your shot pattern.
My 870 with a modifed tube and #5 has a nice even pattern out to 45-50 yds.

Shotguns are not the best on small game like squirrels. Eating shot is not my idea of a good meal. Switch to a .22 rifle and use .22 shorts; go for a head shot.

Field choke is the best for the use you describe, maybe try a different brand of ammo, and a side note for the twit above who said they sell meat in the grocery store, do the animals just lay down and die so you can go to the store to buy their meat? Or does someone have to kill and butcher them, try living in the real world for a change…….

I like modified, but I prefer to use my .22 for the flying tree rats. YOu might be leading them too much or trying to shoot them too far away.

Personally, I see this little thing by each post that says, "report abuse". To my point of view, folks asking questions here are needing an answer, not harrassment by the Peta bunch. This, to me, would be classified as harrassment.
Therefore, I feel we should be reporting it as such. I doubt hunters go to Peta forums and harrass tree huggers about eating cabbage. As a general rule, we have the respect to let leaf-eaters do as they wish, as long as it doesn’t affect us.
So, like I said, I view such comments as the those made above as harrassment, and I will be treating them as such in the future. I feel that my fellow hunters should do the same.
