The only person that can answer that question is yourself, though research.

This is a tactical gun not made really for hunting and barrels to fit it for hunting will be hard to find or non-existent. Get a combo 500 with 2 barrels. One for hunting with removable chokes and one for deer or a short one for HD. You can always buy a extender for the magazine. 6 shots should take care of your needs in any situation. Like I said the extension is cheap and available for the moss 500.

Well, for home defense its a decent choice, but not for hunting. The 9 shot tube is a big no-no. Yo need to plug the tube down to three shells (a dowel rod cut to the correct size works). I would say check out the Benelli Nova, or the mossberg 500 combo package, or remington 870. a good compromise for barrel length is 22-24 inches. Its not ideal for targets, but better for HD. An 18.5 inch barrel is not good for hunting.

I believe Mossberg still offers the Model 500 with a two barrel set, one being a 26" or 28" barrel with screw0in chokes and the other an 18,5" Cylinder bored barrel.
With the plug in the magazine it will hold three rounds and be legal for all hunting. With the 18,5" barrel installed and the plug removed, it will hold six loads of buckshot for home defense.
I’m a great believer in Mossberg shotguns.
