Which shotgun do you prefer: the Mossberg 500 or the Mossberg Maverick?

March 9th, 2010 by eranio

I’m interested in purchasing a Mossberg shotgun, but am not sure of the differences between these 2 weapons. No matter what what model I go with, the barrel will be 20 inches. I will be bringing this to my remote home where it will be used for home defense and must also be capable of stopping large wildlife (i.e. bears inhabit region).

    The Mav *is* a Mossberg 500 simply another model number.

    The ONLY diffs between the two are the location of the safety, the Mossy is on top of the receiver and the Mav is in front of the trigger guard. The Mav comes standard with synthetic stocks and forearms where the Mossy has them as an option. Nothing more. There is no difference in "quality". They are priced differently because the Mossy 500 receiver safety costs more to manufacture and plastic stocks are less costly than wood.

    All parts that fit a Mossy 500 can be used on a Mav and all Mav parts can be used on a Mossy.

    If you plan to use a standard full stock on your gun, both safeties would work just fine….buy whichever you like most. But if you plan to use a pistol grip type stock, the Mossy 500 top safety is tough to use easily. In that case, go for a Mav.

    I prefer the Mossberg 500 shotgun. The Mossberg Maverick is a lot like the Mossberg 500 shotgun, I own one myself and mine has only a pistol grip and no buttstock. But if money was not a problem for me, I would choose the Mossberg 500 any time of the day.

    Spend the extra $30-$40 and buy the Mossberg 500.

    The maverick is just a really, really cheap Mossberg 500. Don’t get me wrong, the Maverick is a perfectly acceptable shotgun, and will serve you well… but wouldn’t you be better served by spending just a *little* more moolah and getting a nicer model?

    Load either with slugs, and under 100 yards you’d have enough power to stop anything in North America.

    Either way you go, it’s not an Ithaca… LOL (couldn’t resist).

    Step up…

    Buy quality!
    Consider this; every gun I’ve bought cost me less when I got it, then what a good used one like it costs now…

    Base your decision on the cost of a defensive weapon on what you feel your life is worth.

    The mossbergs will last a lifetime if you take care of it right. You will also find much more accessories and parts for the 500, (while most of the parts on the maverick and mossberg are interchangable, some are not)

    If you play music or guitar, a good way of putting it is

    Mossberg=fender
    Maverick=squire

    The maverick is just a slightly more barebones, economical, and entry level version.

    I would opt for the 500, the mavrick is ‘made by’ mossberg, but isnt quite as good of a quality as the 500.

    frankly, i prefer the rem 870, but i would much rather have a 500 than a mavrick. The Mavricks are made in USA from mexican and other foriegn made parts, while the 500 is all US made. Also, you cant easily put a magazine extension on the mavrick.

    Spend the extra cash for the 500……. I own both the 88 and the 500 and except for the different location for the safety I am not even real sure what the diff is… I do know the 88 is a decent economy shotgun but why settle for 2nd best when the 500 is supposedly better……..
