Which shotgun is best? Remington 870, Winchester Speed Pump Black Shadow, or Mossberg 500 all-purpose?

I will be hunting mostly turkey and deer. Maybe some duck and pheasant. I will be getting a 12 gauge unless you would suggest otherwise. If you have any other suggestions for a gun in the 300-400 dollar price range, please tell me. Thanks

The 12 gauge Remington 870 Express Magnum is the way to go, no doubt about it! Dollar for dollar, it’s the best pump shotgun around!

THE LAW USE MOSSBERG
i like 12 but 20 is a lot of fun

I am a remington lover so i say go with it. I have a mossberg 500 pump and I hate to say it but it feels cheaply made. I would also look for a lower level Benelli they are around your price range.

Either the Remington or Mossberg. Stay away from Winchester. They haven’t made good shotguns since they quit making them in the US.

The 12 gauge pump action shotgun is highly recomended.

the Remington 870 by far!
I have used all these guns.. if you want the best all around gun for the money, the Rem 870 is the way to go..
second in line is the Winchester..
third is the Mossberg

i have an older winchester and love it. however i believe that the remington 870 is a better gun. i don’t shoot a rem because it does not fit my cheek properly. definitely a 12 ga. you will need two different barrels for turkey and deer.

Go with the 870. I love mine.

i have a 12 ga. mossberg 500 which came with the field and the rifled barrel. i use it for deer, duck and turkey hunting and it is very reliable if you take care of it. it is very simple to take apart and clean and has never let me down is the 5 years i have been using it. highly recommended!

Some law enforcement use Mossbergs because the price is a lot cheaper, they have budgets. For hunting I prefer the Remington because it is a tighter gun and makes less noise. The safety is even quiter. Believe me, that can make a difference when turkey hunting!

The 870 used to be the go to gun of the shotgun world…. Today its crap. Its well known to be very tempermental ejecting certain brands of loads due to burrs on the forcing cone. The extractor teeth have also been known to have problems breaking. Rust with the 870s are also a problem… you must pay extra special attention to them or the will rust pretty bad.
The Winchester Speed Pump is not a gun I know much about… I won’t comment on it.
The Mossberg 500, between the 870 and the 500, is the more relyable gun. Its function and cycling is very relyable for a gun in the price range. It’ll hold its own, even when filthy dirty. The down side of this howerver, is that the mecahnics of the gun to strip down and clean are a little more difficult. If you have never broken one down, you probably will not be able to get it back together without someone with a good knowledge of the gun assisting you.
Personally, however, I would recommend a Benelli Nova. In the shotguning world, it has replaced the Remington 870 as the best pump action gun in the under 400 price range. Very simple to operate, clean, store, and very low maintainance.

They’re both good shotguns. Lots of law enforcement agencies use both models.
I personally have a Mossberg 500A and I love it!

My personal choice is Mossberg 500. I carried one as Boarding Officer while in the US Coast Guard. I only ever had to use it once and that was after being immersed in the Bering Sea. That shotgun worked like a charm and never gave me any trouble. I bought one when I mustered out and have never ever had one problem. I swap barrels as needed for shooting and have ran several thousand rounds through that old gun over 30 years and never ever had a problem.

Get the Remington 870 in Express Super Magnum. You can change chokes and stocks. It’s good for turkey and deer and duck etc.. I own one and I wouldn’t recommend anything else. Barrel doesn’t get hot fast like some other shotguns. It’s a great gun.

I prefer the Mossberg. The location of the safety is better than on the Remington.
