A shotgun is only as power full as the charge in the cartridge. Either a 12g or 20g is ok for rabbits, pigeon crows and game birds.
Duck and geese can be taken with a 3" magnum shotgun at a greater height.
I’ve been with guys on the Solway who use 8 bores and 10 bores for taking geese. – An 8 bore is power!!
Your £400 price tag will get you in the Lanber, lincoln, mossberg, Hatsan and escort range of guns. if you can stick another £100 on to you budget you may pick up a Beretta 686.

Long range with a shotgun? A shotgun is a short range firearm…

ya sorry bud but shotsungs are for short range. whatever you get get a magnum so you can shoot 3" shells as well 2 3/4 " too. like he said its gonna be as powerful as the cartridge in it. i know stoeger has a descent over/under for an unheard of 300!!!! 300 dollars is super super cheap and over unders are goot for birds and rabbits. but a pump gun like a remington 870 or a mossberg 500 would be an alright economical choice also. whatever you decide, good luck

For what you named, I suggest a 410 gauge shotgun. Not too much power, but if you think you need more, get a 20 gauge.

Get a 12 guage Reminton pump (maybe $350US). Get extra barrels if you want to change chokes. learn what ‘choke" means. You can load up with magnum 12 gauge shells that reach out a little farther.
