And not a handgun or pistol formation? I know. I know. Feel free to boo my (weak) attempt at humor. Or APPLAUD (prefered).

the quarterback has more room to release the ball and cant b tripped up by the center, and it spreads out the defense so the team in shotgun can make a BIG play

shotgun formations are usually pass plays. It is easier for the qb to get back especially for the slower ones. They usually get more protection and have more time to throw.

It gives the QB a better look at the field of play and he doesn’t have to take time to step back to throw the ball

Using the shotgun formation, the football can be fired out in a wider array. This makes it easier for the receivers to see it. Of course it depends if you use a birdshot football throw or a slug football throw. Birdshot footballs can go to several different receivers and can actually hit some defenders too. This is a dangerous throw as it can hit anyone at anytime. The slug football throw is a potent blast often knocking over the receiver or defender (or ref if you didn’t like that last %#@$!! call).
Brett Favre likes the shotgun I hear. Must be from all the deer hunting. That would explain why his receivers break so many fingers when they try to catch those bullets (or slugs) he throws…

Easier drop back for the qb and he can see the blind side blitz quicker. As for the name, shotgun, I don’t know.

shotgun means long so they extend back farther for the long pass usually or they go back farther for the fake pass
