Whoever is telling you that doesn’t know what they are talking about. A shotgun is designed to hit moving targets with a spread out shot pattern, hence the name "Shotgun". Slugs would never teach you how to follow through on a moving target or properly estimate the lethal range of your shotgun pellets.

Even a slug gun is just a shotgun modified to shoot slugs in the same manner as a rifle. If that’s what you are going for you might as well just buy a rifle.

Slugs recoil a lot more and are also more expensive than most birdshot rounds so there is no financial reason to choose slugs instead.

    they don’t

This is a new one on me.

If you want a rifle, than buy one but as pointed out above a shotgun is designed for shooting moving targets with spread pattern.

As for cleaning, the best answer would probably clean it out every time you shoot it or every other time. I generally don’t clean my 870 remington that often but I will add a few drops of oil every now and then.

I think the advice recieved refers to frequent lack of rear and front sights on shotguns.
Some have just a bead up front. I don’t buy weapons without fixed sights. For those
who do and want to hit something with slugs the owner will need frequent practice.
Urge reader to become proficient enough to carry mixed loads of buck and slug.
BQ – You clean when the weapon isn’t good to go.

I have never shot a slug through a shotgun in my life and have never heard to practice with slugs, and I was quite proficient with a shotgun when I was younger and shot a shotgun alot.

The only reason to practice with slug is if you will hunt with slugs. Seems like some mossy do not shoot slugs safely. Need to know for sure.I shot some slugs in a moss. I have and the kick was terrible.Went back to using my rifle.

It is a good idea to pull a snake down barrel after shooting and clean every where as your shooting requires

Just for fun did you know you can turn birdshot shotgun shell into a makeshift slug. You cut the shotgun shell with a razor right where the wad is. you do this about the middle of the wad area. When you do this dont let it come apart this is why you do it about middle of the wad so it helps hold it together. Anyway when you shoot it the whole front part of the shell dont open up and stays together more like a solid thus making a makshift slug. if its still on youtube i saw a guy do it that was duck hunting. He said he learned about it from a guy that was hunting for rabbits that came accross a hog and didnt have a slug. he did it and the hog went down.Good thing to know maybe but use caution.
