I own both and can tell you that I actually prefer the pumps.
Remington makes great shotguns, but autoloaders from any manufacturer are going to be a bit more complicated in their mechanisms. If you really want to clean an gas operated autoloader correctly, you have to fully field strip the shotgun, which includes taking the forearm off and cleaning the operating area. With a pump…it is not required.
Also, the weak link in the Remington would be the rubber o-ring on the gas system. I’ve only broken one in owning an 1100 for 30 years…but it still happens. With the 870 shotgun, there are no o-ring that ever need replacing.

What are you doing?
Bird hunting / skeet or trap the 1100 will probably do better.
For general home defense get the 870 with a short barrel and extended tube. It’ll be ready to go and needs less maintenance. Pumps are good and sturdy. It takes a lot to make one fail, semiauto’s tend to foul up easier.

Prefer pumps myself. Less picky about ammo

I bought an 870 express that I use for hunting birds, ducks, geese and turkeys. and It works good the auto would be softer shooting because of the gas operated system but they are less reliable and require more maintenance.

870 Express. My first 12 gauge and that thing is a workhorse. Takes about any shell length. Plus, look at all the accessories. Turn it into a home defense gin in 10 minutes, or switch it back to go hunting.

I’ve owned both a 870 Wingmaster Mag and 1100 Mag. Both with 30 inch full chokes. And could kick myself in the rear everyday for getting rid of em. Which style are they? Mags or plain janes? Both are excellent, it just reflects back on your preference of the action. The Mags are extra rare now and highly prized. If one is the mag and the other is not , go with the mag for sure. If they both are or not. Well it’s your toss up. Lucky if they are mags, good luck.

Assuming the condition is the same on each gun—then the 1100 is the choice-no contest. Nothing wrong with the 870- not a thing, but the 1100 is the smooooothest shooting shotgun ever made. Thats why it was so popular with the trap and skeet shooters.

I am a big Remington fan. I have both the Remington 870 Wingmaster and the Remington 1100. The 1100 can be picky on the type of ammo it likes but the 870 wingmaster feeds them all with no trouble. They are almost the same gun except for the action . Both are great its up to you The 1100 is a little harder to clean and maintain.

Try both first. I am not at all fond of 1100′s (auto loaders). I own eight 870′s because they fit and I can hit with them. Shoot a box of shells through each. You’ll be able to easily decide after that.
