Would you trust a Mossberg 500 over a Remington 870?

Have a 500A Mossberg shotgun I got cheap from a relative. Brand new for 0. My question is, are they reliable and hold their own to the Remington 870? Thanks for all your help. I’ve been hearing some mixed opinions by using google.
Just the field model 28" barrel and I also got a 24" Slugster barrel.
Thanks, wish I had the money for even a Benelli!

You can’t go wrong with either shotgun in my opinion.
The only thing I would do is pick up an 18" barrel for home defense. That way you would have all the bases covered with just one firearm.

I wouldn’t trust either one over the other… in fact, I’d rather grab one of my Ithaca Featherlights! (:neener:)
Okay, okay. In all reality, both of them are superb guns. Sure, they’re not fancy… but you’ll never kill either one, nor will either of them malfunction.
Both are time-tested, proven designs. They both are about as rock solid as you can get (but still far below an Ithaca), and will serve you your entire life without any issues.
Can’t say anything bad about either one of them.

You’ll be fine. I grew up with a 870, but now own 2 Mossbergs (12ga and .410) Never had a problem.

yea, my opinion there both equal in reliability because both guns are used by the military so both passed the same torture test. Mossberg just has the Remington beat for reliability.

Mossberg 500 series shotguns are good, reliable shotguns. 870′s are a little better. Both are reliable, but Mossbergs need a little more care in reassembly due to the fact that they have alot of parts that can fall out when field stripping. And make sure to tighten all the screws in a Mossberg so that recoil doesnt loosen them and possibly cause them to fail or fall out.

This month’s American Rifleman features some small arms used in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the Mooseberg is an issue shotgun for some soldiers. You sure as heck got the gun for the right price, and other than making sure the screw that holds the tang safety in place is good and tight (you might want to put a little bit of Loctite Blue on it), you’re pretty much good to go. Not bragging—O.K., I’m bragging, I’ve got a Benelli M4 Tactical for home defense, and its the same gun the Marines are using over there. Of course, there’s a big difference between the price tags. I’ve got about 1600 bucks into mine, including the 7+1 mag tube and fat charging handle.

Yes. Because until remington puts the 870 through the same torture test of 3,000 00 buckshot withought any cleaning or maintenence whatsoever I would have to say mossberg is the superior shogun. Plus I prefer the saftey.

Trust – Yes.
Reliable – Yes.
Think aobut it. How often do you find gun parts lying about the shooting range or in the woods where they broke down on their owners?

* Yes of course they are a Magnificent Shotgun.* The only difference between a Mossberg and any other Brand is that it is Priced More Reasonable, and More Affordable than other Brands, but just as Good as the others any day of the week.*

I have both they are good it is just a choice of what you grab frist as for me i use the 500 on the water and the 870 on land

I would trust my life to either shotgun. They are both equally reliable, meaning that they will never jam unless you short stroke or suffer a part breakage. You will never fire your shotgun enough for it to suffer a part breakage, as it would take probably over 20,000+ times being fired that it might suffer a part breakage. If they weren’t reliable, numerous law enforcement agencies and militarize wouldn’t use them.

Both the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 are reliable firearms. Both are hugely popular, have been sold in the millions and have legions of fans….
For hunting and other sport shooting each one is equally reliable……
The only place I would not agree is on defense shotguns… If your main purpose of owning a shotgun is for home defense then the Mossberg 500 gets an A+ over the 870….
Here are the technical details why…….

I own both the 500 and the 870…. I use the Remington 870 for pheasant and varmints, a Mossberg 835 for ducks, a Mossberg 500 slug gun for deer…..
But the only shotgun I use for home defense is a Mossberg 500…….

I am one of the few people who do not like Mossberg 500s. I have one and to pump it after you shoot, you have to press the release button. My 870 still works superbly after years of use.
